I agree with you. It's a sorry state of affairs when people are motivated only by money rather than doing what is right.

If you were withholding information UNTIL a reward were given then you'd be evil, but otherwise there's no shame in accepting a reward that someone willingly presented or advertised.
If you felt bad about it then you could just keep half of the reward and give the other half to charity. Hell, even write the person who gave you the reward a card telling them what you did with the money, or better still, spend half of the money on something nice for them (if we're talking a reward for a lost kiddie then send 'em a playstation game or something ;-) ). Everyone's a winner...

I once found somebody's identity card (for his place of work) and when I heard that I qualified for a reward and that the reward would come out of the hefty fine which he would have to pay for losing his card, I asked the person I handed it into to pass it on to him privately, which he did. I didn't like the idea of benefiting from someone else's misfortune.
I would have forgotten all about it, only having filled in my details on the form they gave me, I was rather touched to receive a Christmas card every single year for the next ten years from this unknown person. He certainly didn't forget!
So I suppose that's my answer. I'd be glad to do it because it would give me pleasure to know I'd done the right thing. And perhaps if I had to take the reward I would pass it on to a worthy cause instead of benefiting personally.

I would take half, and give half back. Think about it this way, how many people see others in need while they walk down the street (For example muggings) and just do nothing. Its the same with information. No one is forcing you to come forward, but everyone should be rewarded for a good deed, even if its money. I would give half back, just from the aspect that they respected my information, so i respect them and dont take every penny they have.

The question shouldn't arise because if I knew something I would tell before the reward was offerred if I didn't get the info until afterwards it would depend who was offering it.If it was a millionaire I may take it but anyone else I would refuse it

If I had information about someone who was missing I would pass it over whether there was a reward or not.

I would let the police know and not accept the reward, even though I could do with it as I feel it is just common courtesy and the right thing to do!!

depends ... who's giving the award?
it's not that I wouldn't do it if there wasn't a reward offered, but if a reward was offered, it would be only fair that they get my personal info (which they would have to do anyway) and send the reward, so I'm not facing this dilemma
