Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent mountain bike that won't cost 1000's of $$$?

You don't need to spend 1000s, but you want to make sure that what you buy will work. New, my bike cost £500, about $1000. But I chose to buy last years model from an internet supplier, so I paid considerably less. This price bracket though tends to be the most contested area for manufacturers, since it is considered the entry level area for most bikes.

That said, most machines in this price bracket tend to come with discs, so you might find that a bike with V brakes will get you a better frame and forks for the same money and that is what you want to really spend your money on, since all other components will wear out or get upgraded.
As for kit, Altus, Deore or X-7, with alloy rims.

This puts you into £300 - $450 bracket, so try:

Scott Tampico, Claude Butler - Cape Wrath, Giant Bolder SE.

Go to your local bike shop. Tell them your price range. Get fitted and let them suggest some bikes for you. What you need and what will be "decent" are going to depend on what you want to use the bike for, what type of terrain you'll be riding, the frequency of your rides, the longevity of your rides, etc. Also, getting fit for the bike is of MAXIMUM importance, a lot of riders make the mistake of blindly buying a bike that they "think" will fit. Fitting is usually free, if it isnt at the shop you try, go to another one!
