"peggy p" is wrong lol....diamonds can shatter in an instant, if you knock them along the fracture line, (hit it just the right way against a door handle, etc). Diamonds are on the Hardness scale as a 10, but they arent unbreakable. Diamonds can be scratched by a hard metal such as steel, and of course diamonds can be cut and scratched by other diamonds.

Im pretty sure nothing bad happened to your ring. No need to worry mate

Diamond Durability

Do not be fooled by the fact that diamond is the hardest natural substance in the world. There is a great difference between hardness and toughness. It is very unlikely that you will ever scratch your diamond unless it comes into contact with another diamond and even then it will only scratch in certain directions. Diamond has however what is called perfect cleavage which means it splits easily along certain directions within its crystal structure. This means that a sharp blow or being dropped on a hard surface can cause a diamond to break or develop an internal crack - square stones are particularly prone to loosing their corners for this reason. This property makes diamond come in much lower that sapphire on the insurance companies list of stone toughness. I do not mean that you have to walk about in fear that your diamond is going to shatter at any moment but you do need to take reasonable precautions to avoid putting it into danger like taking it off when you are doing heavy work for example and never just throwing your jewellery into a box all together.

I have a sapphire and diamonds in white gold. I was just like you for the first few months of being engaged, checking it every time I moved my hand haha! Now I take it off to wash hands, shower, wash up, cook etc... anything that could mean chemicals/ water/ other gunk could get onto it. I also take it off at night to prevent it getting caught in bedclothes etc. I plan to have it cleaned and checked yearly at the jewellers it came from, so that they can make sure it's looking as good as new. I occasionally polish it with a jewellery cloth (from a jewellers), but I don't think it makes a great deal of difference to the metal. I haven't polished the stones just in case! (still a tiny bit paranoid!) Hope this helped, enjoy your ring! :-)

Diamonds can only be scratched by another diamond. Keep your diamonds away from other diamonds.
