It's quite simple: it's the most reliable car on the road. It has been for over 20 years. It's just that the Honda Accord and Ford Taurus were at battle for so long that the Camry was somewhat overlooked before. Toyotas were always coined "the old person's car". Maybe so but the Camry (4 cylinder in particular) is easy to operate and light on the wallet in the long run. These cars were practically designed for people who don't maintain their cars well. Non interference engines, easy to access points under the hood(i.e. oil filter, spark plugs, etc.) and count how many wires you see under the hood of one...... Very few. This is the epitomy of what cars should be made like. Not only are the engines easy to work on but they are quiet and buttery smooth running.

The car in general is a well-built, quiet car- typical of Toyotas. Remember the Lexus ES300 sets the standard for quietness against small BMWs, Mercedes, and the likes. The Lexus ES 300 is a Camry under the skin. That's how good a Camry is.

Also, Camry's are made in Kentucky. Yes, it's American -built, but with Japanese quality standards. I know the final bag of loot goes back to Japan but the jobs are coming to us.

dehbee, All other people have answered the important points. Being a mechanical nitwit I've noticed on my own 04 Camry many intresting points you may or may not be intrested in:

1. Fully boxed in lower A frames with bolt on lower ball joints.
2. Four wheel disc brakes that will last 60, - 80,000 miles without a pad change. Brake rotors have enough thickness for 2-3 resurfaceing jobs if necessary.
3. Solid adujustable camshafts. Cam to valve clearances are changed by changing out varing thickness of large diameter valve caps located on the end of the valve stems. No rocker arms or pushrods.
4. Quiet chain driven cam engines.
5. Tight quiet drivers compartments while driving.
7. SE Camry has a strut bar, re-valved struts, slightly stiffer coil suspension springs and larger front and rear anti-roll bars for a better (my opinion) handling car.
8. Smooth yet firm shifting transmission.
9. With the 4 cylinder motor great fuel economy 27-28 in town, 33-35 driving 65 mph..
10. Better than average visibility while driving.
11. 30% higher sales in Japan compared to Hondas.
12 All Taxies in Japan are propane fueled Toyotas.

To be perfectly truthful with you I find it difficult getting in and out behind the wheel do to my 6' 4" height. The steering wheel is too low while adjusted to its max. height while getting in and out. The footwell is too small for my 13 aa shoes. The wiper blades are worthless, 3 - 5 months tops before streaking. Bosch blades are a much better choice.

You may or may not have heard that in some cases Toyota has had a crankcase oil sludging problem. I've personally seen motors taken apart in a nearby Toyota dealership. The internal sludge buildup resembles grey hardened roofing cement. In every case owners had extreemly poor oil change service records. In one case in particular a Camry was in for a motor change @ 83,000 miles. The person who owned it was 72 yrs.old. Since she had purchaced at the same dealership it has been serviced once! One oil change in 83,000 miles. In my humble opinion execptionally intellegent people buy these types of cars and you know what that can mean. Having worked with these types of people for 38 yrs. in a Fortune 500 Company some in real life don't have a clue about maintenence and repair.

If you choose a Toyota go with Mobil 1 synthedic oil @ 5,000 oil and filter changes as the manual says and follow it for all service intervals and you'll forever smile!

Toyotas are very reliable and affordable cars. There are just as many or more Honda accords on the road. Not much fun to drive but great reliable transportation. I drove a 1994 corolla and had no problem with it for over 155,000 miles. Good car to commute with daily.

theyre inexpensive, reliable as hell, practical, good on gas, not hideous, have awesome resale values, and overall are great cars.

they may not be exciting or luxurious or fast, but they still are pretty much the best car for just getting the job done.
