ok here is what you do when you are about to give the injection first make sure the patient is relaxed as much as possible..and with your left hand (unless your left handed) pinch the area where your gonna give the injection and once the needle is in release your pinch and quickly instill the medication...the medication entering the muscle is usually the most painful part and there is no way to really make it less painful. but if they dont feel the needle go in it's less pain. and DO NOT.. use the Z-Track method this is usually used only when the med.'s are irritating to the skin..are are more painful. i've had a few done on myself i perfer a good pinch...happy poking!!

Gate Theory. Slap first or tap sharply. Oh, and always use the ventrolgluteal site. IM's hurt less there, the patient uses those muscles less afterwards, AND less law suits occur with IM's at that site.

Have u tried the z-track method...helps a little...I would stay away from the region on their body that they use alot...Like their butt...move to an arm(the one they use less). I also noticest that the more you talk with a patient the less the pain. It's called distraction. Talk about their families or hobbies...anything to take their mind off what you are about to do. I use it all the time with my patients.

I find that one CC of Lidocaine mixed with the other medication , stops the patient from feeling any pain from the medication. Usually it's the medication that's burning and hurting and the lidocaine numbs everything and the patient doesn't feel the pain from the medication.

Have them relax and not tighten the muscle they are going to get the injection in.
