A man has a larger voice box and thymus than a woman and so has a bump in his throat when he swallows etc. This bump is called Adam's apple alluding to the story from the Garden of Eden (invoking toughts of a piece of apple being stuck in Adam's throat).

I read in a really old book one time that said that at one time,no one knew what to call the lump on a man's throat, and that years & years ago, someone asked an old country doctor why men have a lump in their throat but women don't, and he said jokingly, that's because when God came along in the Garden of eden, Adam swallowed the apple. And the name stuck and it said that because of that one country doctor, people have been referring to it, as an 'Adam's apple' ever since.
