I have deceided that I wan't to join the Marines when I turn 18. I refuse to spend the rest of my life being a drunk and staying in this town for the rest of my life like everyone else in my family. I am about to turn 17 so that will give me a year to prepare for when I enlist. How should I prepare?

if you have some time before you join up, enter into some kind of officer training program. you'll be glad to get a head start.
work out often.
practice marksmenship.
read the geneva convention.
get you hands on military handbooks on tactics, conduct, etc.
start saving up for extra boots and armor.
study US and European military history.
study vietnam and desert campaigns like the North Africa Campaign in WWII and the Arab Revolt under Lawrence of Arabia in WWI.
buy a Arabic for Dummies or any good Arabic language book
read it, again and again.

most importantly... learn about Iraqi and Islamic history. learn the culture, learn the religion and learn the language.
know the difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. Lean about the important figures like Muhammad, Ali and the four "rightly guided caliphs" Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali.
And about important events, The massacre at Karbala, Ali's assasination by the Kharajites at Najaf, etc.

it is extremely, extremely important that you take it upon yourself to learn about the region its culture and its religion. its also really easy to unintentionally insult someone whos costums are different. I suggest you buy an arab etiqutte guide like the Arab World Handbook.

I can't stress enough the impotance of understanding where you are and its history. you will be way more effective and comforable if you appriciate and understand the people there.

Get yourself in very good physical condition. That will help you get through the training a little easier. Do not cause any trouble before then as you need to have your life pretty clean. Just stay clean and sober, and prepare your mind that you will be the best marine you can be.Oh that sounds like the commercial. i am glad you are moving out of the position you find yourself it. The future has no limit if it is what you want. i wish you a long and happy life. may all your troubles be small.Never look back ,keep your eyes to the future. And may God walk with you on your Journey. Ahhh to be young like you again.

If your parents approve and you enlist before you turn 18, attend all of the recruiting functions. You will get to experiences a lot of really cool things and learn a lot before you go to boot camp.

Practice running, doing sit-ups, and pull-ups.

Ask the local recruiter for a copy of our General Orders and memorize them. Also memorize the Marine's Hymn. These things will come in handy at boot camp.

If possible, talk to some new Marines that are just out of boot camp or MCT. Ask them questions about things they wish they had done before they shipped. Ask them for things they wish people had sent them while they were at boot camp and make a list.

Just stay motivated and don't fall into a groove with your friends so that you decide not to leave.

Semper Fi!

Definitely spend time PTing (working out). Spend more time with cardio than strength training, you'll need both, but with all the running you'll be doing, you'll need endurance. Don't get any huge, visible tattoos in the next year. Stay clean and out of trouble. A year is a long time but start thinking about what career field you might be interested in, if you haven't already.

PT every day ^_^, memorize your knowledge, stay motivated. Times will get tough in recruit training but they prepare you for the worst. Know that many before you have attained the tittle Marine and that it is not impossible, but remember we are the Few and the Proud.

All you need to do is work out and run my brother. make a schedule and stick to it. if you do that you will have easier time in training and rest of your marine career trust me. And another key part is preparing yourself mentally, and be determined

think long and hard why your joining, and think what your going to get out of being in the marines...think if you would make a career of it or make another career while being in it.....some people join the service and have nothing to do when they get out and work dead end jobs

Don't do anything that will prevent you from shipping out. Don't break the law. Stay fit, and gain as much knowlege as you can. OH! And break up with your girlfriend before you leave.
