is it true that the uk government will give amnesty? how long will one have stayed to apply with the home office.

Go straight away to the Home Office and tell them you have overstayed your visa. They will sort out the necessary bits. The sooner you see them the better.

The government has explicitly ruled out any form of amnesty for people in the country illegally.

You are way off being able to apply for citizenship. You first need to establish a regaularised right of abode or indefinite leave to remain. It is then at least 5 years before you can apply for citizenship.

You will now have to qualify under the new points system to remain and work in the UK. See link.

if you wanted amnesty, you shouldhave claimed it on entering the country.
citizenship is granted to people who have had so many years of LEGAL residence & work records etc... or if you are married to a british citizen.
