Well, depending on who you talk to, some people do treat alcoholics that way. I guess since alcohol is legal it's a little bit more socially acceptable. My feeling is that we should help people in need not judge them too much. They may have some major psychological issues that caused the problem. Or simply feel sad or depressed. If you are saying why don't we help them more. Then I would say that maybe we should. But, there are many rehabs for alcoholics too. If you are referring to treating them as criminals. I think the Justice system is too full of drug addicted people to fit more people in for alcohol issues.

They r treated the same, same rehabs, same 12 steps to follow, AA meetings to attend. There is drug and alcohol counseling for both. A better question would be, why r there no rehabs for addicted cigarette smokers ? Smoking is banned practically everywhere except one`s home, yet it can be legally bought at any store. It is as addictive as heroin, yet there is no place where a would be quitter could go and live in a cigarette free enviroment for 3 months and rec. support and counseling to help break the cig. addiction. And yet, cigarettes kill more people than drugs and alcohol combined.

Number one killer? Everything kills whether it's a goose at the park or a chainsaw swinging maniac. I think both should frowned upon equally but before being shoved into rehab or something to that nature it should be reviewed carefully because substance use and abuse are two different things.Alcohol just seems to be peoples bigger vice because it's readily available at the local beer store and it is in fact legal. One way or the other using a substance for a crutch is always a loose, loose situation.

to whoever said alcoholics wake up sober - that is wrong.
i'm not sure if you are saying that alcoholics are treated better because they are not.
there is two main reasons though
1) people on drugs will kill for their next "hit", alcoholics tend not to be that dramatic.
2) alcohol is a legal "drug", most people have been drunk where they might not have been "stoned".
i have always said if alcohol was discovered today it would be a class A drug.

Better question... why don't we treat drug addicts the same way we treat alcoholics? Instead we just keep clogging up our jails..

Why don't we make the same laws apply to drugs as we do alcohol?
Do it and we would!

because it is safer to drink alcohol.... after a drunk guy sleeps.. when he wakes up he's not drunk anymore.. this is safer compared to an addcit because a drug addict is still a drug addict after he wakes up from sleep.. and people who get saved from being an alcoholic will still be normal and will stil think straight with a good mind.. a drug addict on the other hand .. when you save one he will stop taking drugs but he won't exactly be in the right mind anymore because the drug has already fried his brain .. gets? i hope you do =)

Because we are too idiotic to believe that since alcohol is legal, there can not be this issue.
