last night, she got into the bathroom trash can and we found a chewed disposable razor with the blade gone. Could it have cut her internally or could it be something else. She is still eating fine, and playful. She likes to sleep a lot but otherwise she seems healthy. this is the first time she has had any blood in her stools and the first time we have seen blood. Do we need to take her to the vet immediately or can we wait and observe. She has had three diahrea stools in 2 hours.

She got into the bathroon trash can yesterday and we found a chewed razor head with the razor missing. She is eating fine, alert, no signs of cuts in her mouth. She has not thrown up at all. She has had 3 semi solid/runny/diarhea stools with a bloody film tonight. They are not discolored but they do have blood in them. The last bowel movement had a lot less blood in it than the first one and it has been 2 hours since she has had diarhea. We did change her wet food yesterday so I don't know if that could affect her. I am worried about it being the blade cutting her or parvo. We have had her for 2 months since she was at the kennel. We haven't taken her away from our house or yard so I don't know if it could be parvo. She isn't acting like she is in pain. It is 10:30 at night so I don't know if I can wait until tomorrow afternoon to go to the vet or if I need to find an emergency vet. She is so sweet and I don't want to be naive and lose her but don't want to overreact.

This certainly an ER visit situation. Get her in and quickly.
I promise you will not be sorry if you get her to the vet.
You may be very sorry if you don't..
I will pray for you and yours.

It could be a number of things, and the vet is the one who is qualified to tell you which it is, BUT here are some ideas:

She could have parasites that she picked up from another dog or feces at the pound. They're intestinal, and they usually take about 10 days to two weeks to show up in a dog's system, which means, you could have her home with you for awhile before she seems sick. Parasites cause bloody diarrhea, lethargy, and sometimes vomiting. They can be treated with simple antibiotics.

Diarrhea can also be caused by a change in food, stress, allergies, and dehydration. Bloody diarrhea can also be caused by a dog straining to go to the bathroom: in this case, it is the anal glands that bleed a little as the dog pushes and strains.

What worries me is that you said you think a razor is missing. If a dog swallows something sharp, that can cause bleeding of the anus, because the dog is trying to pass the item, and it is cutting them on the inside as they are trying.

Keep a really, really close eye on the dog for the next day, and if the amount increases, or if she becomes lethargic or unwilling to eat, drink, or play, definitely take her to the vet right away.

I had a Golden who passed away over Christmas: they are the best dogs, and they deserve the best treatment and care. Good luck with her; you're going to love it!

Personally, I would take her to the vet. Although I am not a pet expert, I would not take any chances. If she has any more diarhea, I would try to take her to the vet. If it starts to slow down, sleep through the night (don't panic!) and see how things are in the morning. Puppies are notorious for getting into things, so it may be possible that she ate the razor, though she could have just chewed it and hid it. (I am not an expert, so please do not take my advice over a professionals!) I would check the puppies mouth, and see if there are any cuts on his gums. If there are, then that means she probably chewed on it. Worst case, she swallowed it. When I first got my puppy, he had diahrea as well, however we found out it was some kind of worm that we had to get medicine for.

Hello..I do hope she hasn't swallowed a razor..and this don't become one of the hard lessons..but dogs have swallowed worse, like whole knives..whew that was amazing..a little blood is not unusual in diarhea or vomiting, just like humans, it can bust little vessels ..if there's alot of blood, things get worse or continues for more then a day definately get to a VET..one way you can tell if a dog is bleeding badly internally is to check the gums, if they are nice & pink...that's good, if mostly white or all white, then it's really time for a VET or an emergency room..gotta be careful around dogs & garbage cans for sure...also I'd check the stools for any signs of a razor just to know if she ever ate it !! Seriously tho do the gum check too ..before panicking...Also plain boiled white rice is good, NEVER COOKED MEATS tho...it seems to me you said she had a bout of this 2 months ago too, sounds like she eats alot of things she shouldn't, I'd watch out for that as well ...Take Care :) PS. good idea as well ..whoever said check the mouth for cuts as well, Pink gums good, white gums bad :) If you would too, plz post or email me with an update, like to hear how things are & that all is well :)

This dog has had 3 Bloody diarrhea stools in 2hours? Get that animal to the vet ASAP.
Not only is this dog running the chance of internal bleeding but dehydration as well.
If infact this dog swallowed a razor blade,it is possible that as the razor blade makes it way through the intestinal tract it is making alot more cuts in the intestines and infection that can't be easily cured could start.
Because activity caused the heart to pump faster and harder,it is NOT a good idea to let this animal continue to romp and play until you have her seen by a vet ASAP ! ! ! !
This dog could lay quietly asleep tonight and slowly bleed to death and you could wake up to either a dead dog or one that is near dead. . . and too late to treat.

It is much better to be safe rather than sorry! ! ! ! !

TAke her to the vet IMMEDIATELY! Bloody stools and a missing razor blade indicate serious intestinal problem. She must go to the vet ASAP and have an Xray or sonogram to find the problem and then perhaps surgery. If you wait and observe the damage will go on and you will just watch her die!

Dogs can't tell you what's wrong. Don't assume it's the razor either. Everytime we change our dog's diet (boarding at kennel) he gets the bloody stool. Did you change your golden's diet? Monitor and call the vet as soon as you can. Err on the side of caution. Better than a sick dog with huge vet bill$...

Yes she needs to see the vet right away. The bloody stool may be from many sources and none of them are going to go away on their own. Try calling an all night vet in your county and tell them her symptoms they may insist they see her right away or they may say she is safe till morning, but I would keep her calm and do not feed her till you talk to the vet. And no water either just in case she needs surgery in the morning. If those diahrea stools are tarry looking or look like theres coffee grounds in them she may need immediate help.

go to the vet. bloody diarrhea could be a couple of things, but they are all serious. she could have eaten the razor or she could have parvo. Either way a trip to the vet is very important

Tell Tell signs of parvo
1. bloody diarrhea that has a very strong and fowl odor
2. lethargic, and a fever
3. throwing up and dehydrated
4. death

OMG, I think you better go to the ER and get an x-ray to see if he ingested the blade. It could wreck havoc in thousands of dollars in vet bills if you don't find out quickly. It could cut open his innerds.

If it's not the blade a dog with bloody diarrhea needs to have his fecal analyzed.

In my case my puppy tested positive for giardia, a parasite. They don't routinely test for that so you may have to ask.

It could also be worms. They pick up a lot of stuff in those kennels.
