I try to explain to these people that "I don't want to feel this way." So if I could snap my fingers and be OK, well golly gee, wouldn't that be great?!!!! I usually deal with these comments by saying that unless you've been through it or have talked to a therpist about what it's like, there's no way you'll understand just how painful it is. Sometimes I say, "If I had cancer, would you tell me to just snap out of it?" Or would you take me to the doctor so I can get help for my condition. It boggles my mind that in this day and age, people still don't understand depression and how it's not up to the person to just "get over it." I get so angry when I hear these things too. Sometimes I just ignore them, other times I say things that I've mentioned above, and when I'm especially POed, I say something like, "When was the last time it took you three tries just to take a shower?" And when they look at me funny, I say, "Yeah exactly. That's what depression is. So you obviously haven't been there and go thank your lucky stars that you haven't, but don't tell me to snap out of it either." Some people will eventually get it. Others are just hopeless.....they will think that depression is just some "fad" and that we're all just whining that we're depressed. They'll never understand. And as far as they're concerned, I couldn't care less what they think. If they can't bother to read up on depression on the Internet, talk to some people, do some minimal research to find out what it really is and isn't, then their ignorant opinion has no value to me. Good luck to you. I'm glad you yourself know that it's not easy and that it is a horrible illness. So please get some help if you haven't already. Leave the skeptics behind!

So many ppl dont understand that its not just emotional, but chemical. I know how it can be, i suffer from anxiety and depression and find that even my family cant begin to understand where im coming from.
I made myself seek professional help, and it is the best thing you could do.
Speak to your doctor and ask to speak to a psychologist, and they are always there for you to dump it on. It takes a while, but it will get better, otherwise you end up curled up in your bed with the covers pulled over your head and dont want to ever come out again.
Be strong and determined that it wont beat you.

On Saturday at 3:30 PM there was a successful jump from the Top of the Stratosphere. This was successful in ending the depression for the Jumpee; unfortunately it started a bout of depression for the 3 people 1100 feet below he almost hit. On top of that the Hot Dog Guy over at the Luxor was blown to bits by a Car Bomb in the parking Garage at the Luxor. But worst of all on the very same day Oscar de La Hoya LOST to Mayfield over at Mandalay Bay and Still got to keep 30 million dollars. And now I have Depression here all by my lonesome in Las Vegas.

I have had depression for as long as I can remember. Most people don't understand. People used to say to me "think positive" I just hated it--it made about as much sense as "if pigs had wings they could fly." I believe I had clinical depression since childhood, but I finally got treatment when I was about 26.
Tell a medical doctor how you feel; a psychiatrist if you can find one. That's what I did. I don't have a lot of faith in psychologists or conselors--they can't prescribe medication. A lot of people feel they are helpful, though.

I get that from my mom and twin sister. I was sexually assaulted by my siter's boyfriend and his friend's and my sis went and hid them after I reported it. They laugh and roll their eyes when my Dr tells them I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I have learned to keep feelings and thoughts from them. I have a couple of close friends that I can talk to and I have to change my meds every year and a half or so. I still have my good days and bad days and I just avoid people on bad ones. I write alot even if it's just "hate" on a whole piece of paper, that helps.

The people telling you that you need to get over it, need to read and educate themselves on depression. Depression, if not treated will over time can sometimes go away. But, in most cases if it's not treat, will get worse.
It's an imbalance in your body that needs your doctor's help!

People who tell you just to "get over it" have never been depressed, nor do they have any compassion or tact for that matter. Ignore them.

are you saying attitudes from other people or from your self. From other people I would say unless your going through what I'm going through please keep your opinion to your self, If you want to be here for comfort that's fine but please don't make comments that are hurt full. If it's from your self, your probably trying to tell your self to move on, just have patience with whoever there coming from!
