How many people cling to a belief in God because they couldn't survive the inhumanity of this society/culture
without having something greater to grab hold of just to make it through another day?

You're not alone in thinking so, and in fact it's a belief that has been long held by many people.

I think that the only reason people believe in god is because it is the easy way out. It's easier to say a higher being has done all these things, than to understand the science behind it. It makes it easier to cope with lives hardships. It's peoples ways of explaining things that they don't understand, or that scare them. It makes them feel as though they have a purpose other than just this life, and that they won't just die, and be gone, but there will be life after death.

wouldn't it make more sense to become that greater power you want in the world?

It seems to be a very big fall back.....like saying big bro help me from the bullies.

You gotta leanr to beat the bullies youself otherwise you are enslaved to needing your big bro.....

The same might be true for many people.
I no say that ALL peopleact this way with the god of christians, but is seems like there are enough to create a stereotype.

It may come from simply not believing in yourself. I fthat doesn't exist, you won't think yourself able to accomplish anythin without a "higher power". There have been many cases of capable people failing or not trying because they didn';t believ in self

Absolutely no. This is one of the questions Satan frequently whispers to men. It is only The Creator who creates. He creates us and all of our creations. If there is truly an existent one it is God himself. There are so many proofs of his existence. One of those is the universe itself. All the orderliness and the interrelatedness of things in this universe bear witness that there must be someone that administers and controls them. Next, the prophets. Thousands of prophets have come and past our world bearing the message of God, with their followers still conveying that one message, that is belief in God.
And as we all know a painting cannot be without a painter, a book without an author, a dress without a tailor, etc.... It is just the same for the universe, it would have not existed if God did not created it.

In a way, yes. In another way, no.

Evolutionary psychology points to the idea that a belief in God/practice of religion was beneficial to building communities and unity within individual humans. People live longer if they live with other people, it's been proven.

So many levels of irony, I can't sort through them all.

And what do you suppose people grab hold of? Money? A wide screen tv? A nice house? I'd rather grab a hold of something I know is true than some piece of crap material that can be snatched from under my feet at any given will. It's usually the simple minded of the "Career first, God later" type that think life is about dem' dead presidents. The only thing they see is their "fabulous career" and not the world for what it truly is. But that's ok. I'll put my faith in something solid...

God is something you must realize. True, many people probably believe in God because others do. I, myself, was brought up in a family that believed in God. So, in some may I was conditioned to believe in God. But, I also believe, that as one spiritually progresses, he or she accepts and genuinely believes in God. But, you're right, in this "modernizing" and materialistic society, people have "held" on to God. Whether it be by "fear," or other's beliefs, people have become delusional.

Absolutely. It frees people from thought and taking responsibility for their actions. Not to mention it's alot easier to control people when they are frightened of some invisible, undefinable father figure. Nowadays governments use the fear of terrorism to accomplish the same thing...

Do you think that question is original on this forum? It's asked by the same psuedo intellectuals who presume to be much wiser than us poor ignorant Christians. I don't "believe" in God, I KNOW He exists. So, from my humble perspective, your pretentiousness only hurts you.

Maybe He is, maybe He isn't. No one should judge people based on their religious beliefs. Some of us believe God is in our lives, some don't. Religion isn't for everyone.
