not suppose to use lead because it my kill other animals by them eating it but steel and brass would both do the same

It really depends upon the distance you will shoot them if they are fast flyers and you will shoot them within 20-25 metres then go for a no8 lead shot 32 grams with an improved cylinder. if you will shoot them trap style then use a 71/2 load of 24 to 28 grams lead shot that is more heavy and will penetrate more espessialy now where the weather is hot, do not do the mistake of using very heavy loads and use an light modified for up to 40 meters forget about full chokes.
lighter loads give faster speeds check out the winchester aa 24 grams 71/2 they are excellent.
however this is for small turtlle neck doves.
If you are hunting pigeon (biger) they are much tougher and you will need no 6 shot maybe and no5 36 grams.

What would be ideal would be a shell loaded with either #6, #7.5 or #8 size shot. You are probably going to want 1 and 1/8 ounces of shot per shell.
These run around $6/25 in my area.
