I was wondering why some stay at home moms charge so low for daycare in their homes? Do they feel like they don't have much value or they have nothing to do with their time?

Wow, that's a great question. Certainly a perspective that I'd never considered before. I think for a lot of them, they just don't charge a lot because they don't need to earn a whole lot of money and they're trying to be nice to people who aren't as fortunate as they are to be able to stay home.

I'm a certified child care provider I care for children in my home.I have a bachelors degree in Family Studies. I was running two head start programs before I started my in home. My daughter was 9 months old when I started. My husband and I still needed the income but I also wanted to stay at home with my daughter. I have to follow regulations, keep a small business license, and I have to pay taxes all the money that I make. It is not an easy job it is a has it's good days and bad days just like every job. Yes, you do save money because you don't have to buy dress clothes for work but than you have to take on the expensive of feeding other people's children. Maybe they are charging less because than they are not claiming it on their taxes and you as a parent are not able to claim it on your taxes. There could be several different reasons but if you are concerned about the care that your child could be getting from a stay at home mom than research it better and ask for references.

I think a lot of the time, they would be staying at home anyway, and see a home daycare as a way to stay home with their kids and bring in a little extra money.

Also, the cost of running the daycare is a LOT less expensive. They aren't exactly paying for space and utilities, since they'd be paying those bills anyway. They're not paying for wages, benefits, training, bonding and insuring for a full staff. They have less 'stuff,' like little tables and chairs, cubbies, full playgrounds, busses or vans (and insurance for busses and vans), supplies for classrooms full of kids, ect. Lopping that much off the overhead costs allows them to charge less.

Plus, they're usually sympathetic to the plight of parents who need to work to make ends meet but who are stuck putting their child in an undesirable daycare or losing most or all of the second paycheck to high price childcare. It could be that that's why mom is home to begin with: losing money by working.

good question, maybe because they're just trying to earn some extra money while staying at home with their kids at the same time. and, at times maybe to give their kids some interaction with other kids.
but, maybe some stay at home moms with a daycare will answer.

They know how much it costs to be a parent and how much day care really costs. It's their way to give other parents a break since they are lucky enough to stay home. They value themselves that much that the money charged is not a factor in giving quality day care. Those parents should be praised for the financial break they are giving to others.

I certainly wouldn't pay as much to someone who is unlicensed. A licensed daycare provider has to pay for licensing, insurance, training, taxes, etc. They are bound by laws. Facilities (home and otherwise) are inspected for safety and security.

Unlicensed providers are not subject to regulations.

To me, it's well worth the extra money.

Well they are not licensed or anything. They also probably just want their kids to have playfriends or earn extra cash for whatever. I am a stay at home mom and I love to have money of my own I don't have to ask for, but I don't babysit.

Hi, I think that because they don't need to pay extra for utilities, they don't need to pay salary or benefits for other workers and they don't need to hire more staff. However, if i need to make a decision, i would prefer home mom. I think the environment will be warmer.

It is because they know how expensive it is to have children so the are trying to give working parents a little bit of a break.

1.because their husband may work and they are trying to help other moms out
2.because it is sometimes easier when you have two children to entertain each other
3. because they look at it like they are taking care of their own kids so it is not that much extra effort to take on one more
