Every time I eat I start coughing AFTER I have finished my meal. You know the feeling when you are starting to get sick and there is stuff in your throat and it makes you cough?

This is how it feels after eating. I can actually feel something in my throat and I cough and have to clear my throat for about an hour after every meal. It is VERY annoying!

What is this? How do I make it go away?

It sounds like you have acid reflux. The digestive fluids in your stomach go back thru the cardiac [ valve from esophagus to stomach ] sphincter to your esophagus, causing that gagging, coughing feeling.
Try:
1] smaller, more frequent meals
2] don't lie down after eating - wait 4 hrs before going to bed
3] wear looseclothes [ waistbands, belts ]
4] loose weight if you are too heavy
5] elevate the head ofyour bed
6] a spoonul of vinegar works
IF this doesn't help, see your doctor, before it progresses to cause damage to your esophagus.

I also do this, even if I just drink too much water. I have GERDS and take medication for it. I also have a hiatal hernia which doesn't help. It does help some to only eat small amounts of food at a time. Never Never Never eat until your full or you will have a night from hell. I wake up in the night coughing and choking if I do that. I try not to eat or drink after 6 p.m.

This book is probably the most informative and practical guide on the subject of acid reflux and heartburn that I have ever read https://tr.im/JUWUV
I was prescribed Lansoprazole which was brilliant but after two years of aching joints, extreme muscle pain which the doc gave me cortisone jags for, with some research I discovered the drug Lansoprazole was causing these rare side effects but it was I who diagnosed it NOT my doctor, I came off the drug 2 months ago, changed my diet and discovered just eating an apple stops any acid reflux, I eat an apple before bed, brilliant no acid, any time I feel the slightest sign of reflux I simply eat an apple. Apple juice is not that good nor is anything else I have tried including honey at stopping reflux.

I know this is from years ago but maybe this could help others too. I have had the same problem. It has gotten worse after I got braces. I react to almost everything I eat. Also look into autoimmune disorders and leaky gut. If you have leaky gut syndrome it can make food allergies worse and can lead to other issues like achy joints, bladder, constipation, brain fog, fatigue etc...Eating very simple and slow helps. Cut out gluten, soy, corn, red meat and refined sugar and caffeine. Eat mostly a plant based diet. also oatmeal, flax seed and juicing is good. Check out Digestacure! also comprehensive gut health from pioneer has helped me.

Making dietary changes is your first line of defense in treating hypothyroidism. Learn here https://tr.im/uexTo

Many people with hypothyroidism experience crippling fatigue and brain fog, which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar and caffeine. I’ve dubbed these rascals the terrible twosome, as they can burn out your thyroid (and destabilize blood sugar).

1. Just say no to the dietary bungee cord. Greatly reduce or eliminate caffeine and sugar, including refined carbohydrates like flour, which the body treats like sugar. Make grain-based carbohydrates lesser of a focus, eating non-starchy vegetables to your heart’s content.

2. Up the protein. Protein transports thyroid hormone to all your tissues and enjoying it at each meal can help normalize thyroid function. Proteins include nuts and nut butters; quinoa; hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products (organic, grass-fed meats, eggs, and sustainably-farmed fish); and legumes.

It might be food allergies making your thyroid swell. Food allergies typically cause swelling of the thyroid and the lymph nodes on the neck, hives, heat flashes, loss of breath, tightness of the chest, or even vomiting. If you experience any of these other symptoms monitor what you are eating and talk with your doctor.
if it isn't food allergies, it could be an asthmatic trigger. Do you eat alot of dairy? Dairy can aggravate asthma problems if they are already present.
