Hey there. My husband and I are in the process of purchasing our first home. The home that we fell in love with needs some updating...mostly cosmetic. I was curious if you could give me round-about costs for the following repairs. I know that it is hard being that there is not much info about the house, but a rough idea is good since we really have no clue. Keep in mind that we will be updating the house "on a budget." I know I can spend a million $ updating a kitchen, but what do you think is the min I can get away with.
1. Exterior siding (the house is about 1700 sq ft. not sure if that helps)
2. bathroom tiles
3. updated kitchen (cabinets and floors)
4. A fence
5. Doors (bedroom and main doors)
6. Windows (I know there is at least one bay window, then the rest seem to be regular ol' windows).
Thanks!

Obviously I will get a "real" estimate when the time comes. I was just being impatient and was "researching" since I can't seem to sleep. I figured that somebody would have ballpark figures. I understand that there is great varibility and little info provided. I just wasn't sure if a front door costs $5 or $5,000 and figured that somebody else would.

Prices are hard, depends on your location, and do you plan on doing the work or having a contractor come in. Multiply the cost by 3 (at minimum) for a contractor. My prices are for you doing the work.
Exterior siding - for example, redwood siding is about $1.75 per foot, give or take, no labor. This is 1 x 8; 1 x 6 is a bit cheaper, but you use more.
Tiles - size matters - but 4 - 6" tiles for around a tub/shower would cost about $400.
Updated kitchen...wow, figure $20K and you are probably starting to touch the surface. Cabinets are the key here. Premade cabinets are cheaper, but then you have to work around the dimensions. $50K is more in line to what you will end up paying, depending on whether the countertops are tiled, granite, or granite simulations.
Fence - how many linear feet? Posts - steel or wood? support beams....figure $350-500 depending on some of the decisions to make.
Doors - sorry, no price given, not enough info. Plain composition doors are cheap ($75 each, but do you know how to align and set them?) Prehung doors are more, but than you get into some real bucks if you want quality doors.
Windows...same as before, no dimensions, kinda hard. A bay window is about $2K, standard windows about $250-800, depending on size.
Sorry this is vague, but in all honesty, you should contact a good contractor through recommendations (verify he has a bonded license) and let him run some numbers for you. Good luck

1. Exterior siding (the house is about 1700 sq ft. not sure if that helps)
You could expect to pay around 1800.00
2. bathroom tiles
Price will differ greatly on what you choose. you may find some nice close out material at a lower cost. Around 100.00
3. updated kitchen (cabinets and floors)
Kitchen cabinets may be able to refinish. If replace then your looking ta 1500.00 or so.
The flooring can be reasonable if you go with leftover stock. nicer flooring will run more. 300.00 to 500.00
4. A fence
Again, it depends on what you want. Figure 1500.00 to 2000.00
5. Doors (bedroom and main doors)
Doors can be costly, but you should be able to get by at $40 per door.
6. Windows (I know there is at least one bay window, then the rest seem to be regular ol' windows).
Hmmm.. This one I would say will be a bigger expense. Probably $2500.00+

Depending on where you live and the going labor rate but figure you will spend 40K minimum. This is just a guess because there are so many different qualities of products out there so ask for free quotes from contractors to get an accurate idea of the costs.

Go t o Lowe's.
1. Get an estimate on siding.
2. Tiles measure the square footage, then ask at Lowe's or home depot. and go to one of the classes they teach on how to install. It's Fun to learn.
3. Cabinet Department will help and computer generate plans
4. Figure out how tall and how long. take the classes and get estimates an Lowe's.
5. go to milling department at Lowe's or home depot.
6. Call a local window company and get estimates.
Good Luck!!!
take the free classes and do it yourself. it really will boost your confidence and pride.

What you can do is to start looking at ads from home improvement stores.
You can check prices on siding, the cabinets and tile or other flooring, fencing, interior doors, and replacement windows.
I had American Windows installed in my house, they were the cheapest, that I found and I was happy with their work.
At least this way, you will know the material costs and decide if you want to do the job yourself or hire someone to do it for you. good luck

if your husband or yourself have any basic home repair knowledge you can do some of it yourselves and it wont cost as much. doors are easy to replace, go to your local hardware store i recommend home depot and get the doors you want and put them on. you can do the kitchen yourselves as well buy premade cabinets and put them in the floor you may want to have done depending on what you want. and bathroom tile isn't too hard to do. as for the rest call a home repair company in your area and they will come out and give you a free estimate.

Make it easier on you and I, and get a local professional to look at it. Quotes are general, but free.
Or, secondly, go to your local HOME DEPOT with accurate measurements, choose your material, and they will quote you.All of the sores in my area also have an installation service that will give you an idea of the cost for that end of things.
Done.

Seems to me that about $5000.00 would cover it. Best check with a contractor.
