Diotima is thought to have been either the Oracle at Delphi, or she was made up by Plato to give his dialogue more credibility.

She is known for having taught Socrates.

Diotima, Socrates' great teacher
She told Socrates about the theory of love, and that we grow in our conception of love as we age. When young we place value on the beauty of the young body, but as we age we see beauty in all bodies, and only then we look into the beauty of the soul. Her words were, "Love is important for it starts and continues us on our path."
Yes she did.
