I NEED SOME Assistance HERE!!?

Question

Recently, I have gone back to school at UCLA, and I once again took up foreign languages. I take Spanish ,french, German courses, but for some strange reason I can't grasp the french as easy as the spanish. I`ve always been good in speaking German cause I can't speak English, but French is a real challenge for me it's really hard.

Should I drop French and just do spanish?! Why is french so HARD to speak and understand?

What do you need French for, anyway? It's not spoken in that many countries. Spanish, on the other hand, is the most widely spoken language in the U.S. other than English and the third most widely spoken language in the world (#1 is Mandarin Chinese and #2 is English.) Why not drop French and concentrate on the other languages?

French is not really hard grammatically, but the pronunication is tough - you will find French hard to understand even if you can read it. People talk very fast and leave out a lot of words.

Spanish is probably more useful to you. I would stick to what you are already good at, unless you have a special reason to learn French.

However, if you want to stick to this, think of it as another Romance language, not that dissimilar from Spanish really.

Take one thing at a time - all the verbs fall into three groups and there are many irregulars you have to remember. The vocabulary is not that hard to grasp. What is tricky is putting sentences into the negative, because these days people speak it differently from the way it is written. It is also tricky remembering expressions of quantity, etc.

I would take a deep breath and decide to either 1.drop it or 2. take it much slower than before... and lower your expectations of youself. You certainly cannot learn it in a week.

Maybe you should try a French immersion course first, before deciding anything.
