like for instance, mixing differnet everyday household items together like i dont know, nutmeg and ground rose pettels and putting them in a red napkin and trow it into the sea while chanting something repeatedly. what spicifcaly produces the effect you desire? what is so special about mixing spices that is so magical? i have always studied magic but i never understood why witches do these things?

The ingredients and formulas don't produce anything magically by themselves -- the witch or magician does that themselves. The Magick is in the energy raised and directed by the intent of the magician or witch. The ingredients of the spell are symbols which help the practitioner to focus and direct his/her intent. By themselves, they are just symbols. A rose is a rose. In the context of the spell, however, they take on symbolic meanings based on various systems of magical correspondences. A rose, then, becomes another symbol in harmony with the planet Venus, and therefore also the Goddess Venus or Aphrodite. This, in turn, provides a focus for the witch to connect to the energies of that deity. None of this is necessary for effective Magick. All one really needs is the intent, and with proper focus a magician can Will their desire into being. The spells, rituals, ingredients, and formulas are but stage props to aid in this process. By themselves, they are nothing. If you just go through the motions, perform a spell directly out of a book, but without Intent, it is a pointless venture. But pure Will, even without going through the motions of the spell, is a powerful force indeed!

Frater P has it. The different ingredients used in a spell are focuses for gathering energy and directing its use. Every witch I have ever met have different ingredients that they use because these different ingredients mean something special or powerful to the witch. Many people think that the color red represents love, but in my minds eye pink is love and red is lust. If you would use red roses, I would use yellow because they are so sweet smelling. These differences are the reason that we should each keep a BOS, and not just copy someone else's work.

I was speaking to my mentor, a hedge witch, just yesterday and we were discussing just this exact thing. It isn't the candles, or the stones or the particular ingredients in a spell that make the spell work. As already pointed out by a few respondents here, it is the intent and the will of the one casting the spell that make the magick happen. The cinnamon sticks, the patchouli, the tiger's eye, the green candle ... these are tools that aid the witch in focusing her/his energy into the desired effect. They do that by their scent or their color or their texture.

Frater Pan is exactly correct. I would question only one thing you said, and that is that you have always studied magic. Did you study under someone who actually has the gift? If so, they are very remiss in their teaching of you and you need to ask this question of your mentor. If you did not, I would advise you to not use just books to learn magic (yes, folks, I come from a very old line of celtic witches and we practice magic, not the new 'magick' sorry if I offend anyone here - I read the earlier comments). It is important to gain knowledge from those who come before you. If you do not have magic in your bloodline, don't despair, it can be imparted by the intent of a strong and focused teacher. Apprentice yourself to one.

Often the "why" behind it has been lost from one culture absorbing and integrating invading cultures' belief systems, so that the original action, the original purpose, has been obscured. We don't, in modern times, "remember" why, and it seems to not make sense anymore.

However, there are ways to try to find some answers... read ancient texts, such as the Norse Poetic Eddas, Celtic Mabinogion, and Irish mythologies... even though there may be biased scholarly "opinions" in many places in translations, there is still some semblance of the original stories intact, and we can attempt to understand again.

Another way to try to understand is to read some basic "Wicca 101 how-to" books that have correspondence information in them, so that you can learn about "meanings" of each ingredient... once you start seeing connections between ingredients, you'll start understanding better "why"... at least the modern "why" for it, even if you can't find an historical "why" to it.

Good luck... enjoy your researching. :)

Frater Pan is right.

The point of the objects is to use them and their energy to help the caster focus his intent.

I have heard of people being able to cast spells just with the chants or even thinking the chants but I'm not sure if that's possible. If so you would need to be enormously experienced.

You have either studied the wrong material or under the wrong persons and have been misinformed and taught incorrectly and incompletely.

It is not the objects themselves or the actions using the objects that create the desired results. The power comes from the energy of the individual. The objects and the rituals are used as a focus point for the practitioner.
