I don't know about "dumb" looking as it is a matter of person's taste. Lower end Hondas are very good starter cars and it meets all of your other your requirements.
It cost a little more than other cars of the class, but it retains the value so well, you get most of the difference back when you sell/trade it in.

Don't buy domestic. Stick to small japanese offerings like Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Subaru etc. I find it so funny that everyone thinks Japanese cars are ruining the domestic competition in the US when in fact they aren't. Many "imports" are made in North America. The Corolla and Civic is made in Canada. My Nissan Altima and Nissan Frontier were both made in Smyrna,Tennessee. The new Tundra is made in San Antonio, Texas.

Buick. Great starter cars, not too bad on gas mileage, and Buicks look sophisticated, and you can usually get over 200,000 miles out of them.

my first car was a 1988 honda accord lxi. i bought it off a friend for 450.00. i owned it for 3 years and only had to change the oil. i then sold it to another friend for 500.00. it got about 30mpg and as far as reliability goes, can't beat a honda. as long as you take care of it.
