Like the Eurofighter, J-10, Su-(something-the latest one), the French one, etc... I know it's stealth but then it is only Mach 2 class so does this mean other planes are faster? Also, there are only 180 of them right?

So you all agree that the US will buy thousands of F-35's??? Isn't that a lot?

The F-22 has a kill ratio of 144 to 0 in mock combat with up to 4 F-18s to 1 F-22 at a time. It can go mach 1.72 without afterburners and is actually its cruise speed (the speed with the best fuel milage ratio). The max speed is about mach 2.5. The F-22 doesn't show up on any known radar yet so the enemy can't lock on to the F-22, but the F-22 can lock on to other planes.
Remember afterburners eat up a lot of fuel so for instance the aircraft can try to turn on afterburners to try and run away and after 15 minutes or so that plane is out of fuel. I think the Foxbat can go over mach 3, but it's more of a rocketed intercepter than a fighter aircraft.
Speed affects range. The faster they go, the more fuel they need which drops their range.
I think the airforce plans on making just 339 of them. After all they are expensive and few countries have that many fighter aircraft (most of which will probably be blown apart while they are still on the ground). The U.S. plans on having 2,400 F-35s.

i dont know how many are in service but the original airforce plan was to field 339 aircraft. less i would think will be built due to its high cost. it is as fast as most fighters (the mig-25 foxbat can exceed mach 3 for a short distance, but is a bomber intercepter and could never fight with an air superiority fighter such as the f-22) but speed is not that important. you cant kill what you cant see. the russian su-37 super flanker could pose a viable threat to the f-22 IF it could get in close due to its very high manouevrability (some say it could out handle the rapter). also dont forget the saab jas 39a gripen which is also one of the most advanced fighters today. overall all though the rapters stealth, ability to supercruise, long range attack ability, and thrust vectoring manoeuvrability make it probably the most effective fighter in service at this time. the f-35 is a good aircraft and more cost effective but in the end i dont THINK that there will be "thousands" of them produced.

The Raptor is an "all- american fighter jet" whereas the JSF is for the US's allies as well as for the USMC and USN! The F-35 is actually a cheaper version of the Raptor as it utilises the same technologies at an affordable price! Although the Raptor has more speed and maneuvrebility than the F-35 because of it's Thrust Vectoring! The F-35 will prove to be just as good as the Raptor! You maybe aware that the US government has stopped further production of the Raptor limiting it to 187 aircraft and Robert Gates is accelerating the production of the F-35! Raptor price tag $142 million F-35 Price tag $83 million

F-22 owns every single airplane on this earth doing what it was meant to do. No Russian or Chinese jet even comes close no matter what propaganda you may year. Even if they somehow managed to copy and match the F-22, they could only do it for a few airplanes. The reality is the F-22 will kill them before they even know the F-22 is in the air.

Supplemental to the other answers, the thousands of purchased aircraft will be spread out over the Air Force, Marines, Navy, England, Australia and several other buyers. Remember, once the kinks get worked out, everyone with a little jeep carrier will want to fit them out with '35s, like the Thais, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Brasil, etc.

Su-37 Super Flanker (or Terminator if you watch "Stealth"), but in the 21st and even late 20th century it was found that speed was no longer the name of the game. now it's stealth, multi-role capability, range, payload, and other stuff. yeah, there are only like 184 (very expensive); they're being supplemented by the 3450 JTF X-35 strike fighters the air force is buying. yes, the F/A-22 is very sophisticated, but it all depends on the pilot. also, the "French one" i presume is the Dassault Rafale.

A single F-22 can take on fifteen F-15/F-16s at the same time.
The highest the F-22 has been pushed is Mach 2.42 without afterburners. They will not release the true top speed of the plane, with afterburners.
It can see and attack a large bird at over 200mi away.
The number of them is more like 10, not 180. They cost 150mil each. (180 would cost $27,000,000,000) Because of this, they have achieve a lifetime total of 0 kills, they are thought to be too expensive to risk in the current conflicts we see today.
