x * 1.0775 = 107.75

Solve for x and get 100

$100. x .0775 tax is $7.75, the item was $100. If you multiply the amt of the item by putting a 1 in front of the sales tax you will get the total amt of the purchase including the tax.(100x1.0775=$107.75). ($129.99x1.0775=$140.06).

Using a calculator, enter the total, then subtract the percentage sales tax. Enter $107.75 into the calculator, then subtract 7.75%, giving you a result of $99.39 The bill, before tax, was $99.40.
