Go to a liquor or wine store and ask for suggestions. Tell them what you are planning to serve and how much you are willing to spend and they can usually recommend something good. A couple of my favorite wineries that are good without being too expensive are Kendall Jackson, Chateau St. Michelle, and Columbia Crest. A notch up are Sterling or Coppola. There are some good Chilean reds out there that are very good too. My favorite is Santa Rita Reserva Cabernet.

ETA: I noticed that the first poster listed Stag's Leap. Their Merlot is to die for. I have seen it for around $28-$30 a bottle. I would imagine their Cabernet is good too.

They probably will not expect you to also be a wine enthusiast. There are some great red wines in a variety of price ranges. For excellent wine without regard to price, I'd choose Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for $99 a bottle.

For a more middle of the road but still great wine you could go for one of these: Kosta Browne Pinot Noir ($38), Silverado 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon ($40) or Domaine Alfred Pinot Noir Chamisal ($28).

For a best buy (great wine...low price) go for Greg Norman Estates Cabernet-Merlot ($15) or Jacob's Creek Shiraz ($13)

There are so many wines out there that the best thing to do is to find a good wine store in your area and ask the clerk what he recommends a the price level you are willing to pay. Also, don't forget to have a clear idea as to what you will be eating and take that info to the store so you can pair the wine with the food. You don't want to pay for an expensive bottle of wine to later find out it did not "match" your meal.

Another tip: Invest in good wine glasses. A wine glass can enhance or destroy a wine. If they like drinking wine, they will enjoy drinking it in an adequate wine glass. Its worth the investment and you'll score some additional points!!! Cheers!!

depends on what kinda price range, and how snobby they are, really.

You can pick up a very good bottle for around 20 bucks, but many people think that paying more somehow makes it taste better.

If they actually like wine, and not the monetary part about it (status symbol), then there are tons to choose from.

Id suggest something safe like a merlot, but a personally im a big syrah/shiraz fan myself.

id advise going to either a costco or a central market and asking the people there to help you out. Both usually have a dedicated wine employee. Look at the Wine spectator ratings they usually have on there.

and i do give a thumbs up to Stag's leap.

WIth so many different red wines... stay away from the wine in a box.....

Just kidding.. The best thing to do is ask them.. Just call them and ask her what kind of wine does she like...

Too many different kinds and flavors to take a guess..

Ofcourse you can go with Clos Du Bois (Cabernet or Merlot) but one of my favorites is Concannon. Here is a link to there web site: http://www.concannonvineyard.com/
I usually buy it from my local grocery store Ralphs or Vons. Not sure where you are located but should be pretty easy to find.
