For the past few months, I have been endaevoring to read Bram Stoker's "Dracula" but my dad wouldn't let me! And when he caught me reading it, he snatched it from me, and burned the whole damn thing! He's like, "This is a very very unholy book! Not just unholy, mind you, but evil!" I'm like, "Dad, c'mon! It's literature! It's fiction!" And he's like, "Fiction?! Fiction?! Even Satan himself can use fiction!" He wouldn't even let me mention the book, for Pete's sake!

Your Dad sounds very closed minded and put off from the rest of the world, if you ask me. He probably is just trying to protect you; however, if he persists with this "evil literature" line of thinking, especially if Gothic novels like "Dracula" are interesting to you, you should just tell him that you are not reading this to become demon posessed but rather for entertainment. Some adults have a hard time growing up with their belief structure but I'm sure your Dad will come around.

Tell your dad this:

The story of Dracula – unlike the huge number of ridiculously lame movies modern/semi-modern Hollywood has put out – is a book in which Christian morals and beliefs (and, in part, Christian superstitions, but you don't have to tell him that, lol :p) defeat Satan and the power of the devil. It is a story of God’s power triumphing over Satan’s power.

I had the same debate with the pastor’s wife of my church. People are quick to denounce the book as horrible devil worship and whatnot, but they are entirely uniformed about it; they have not read it themselves, and do not know what they are talking about (sadly, I think the ridiculous Dracula movies – which are not at all like the book – do a lot to prejudice people’s opinion).

Good luck -- the book is very good, btw!

Your dad is trying to protect you from the demonic forces and spirits out there. He should have explained that to you, instead of just throwing the book away. Any time you read books of this nature, it can make you acceptable to the dark side, it opens doors for them to get through. Although on your part its just being looked at as a form of entertainment in an innocent way. Unfortunally its not looked at like that from the point of view of demon spirits, they look at it as an opportunity to take some innocent sole and corrupt it into thinking and doing evil things. Must be very careful when dabbling with things from the dark side, even in innocent fun.

I wouldn't be suprised. Are you aware of how many kids aren't allowed to read the Harry Potter series because it has make-believe magic in it (like their religion isn't already full of that.)

You'll turn 18 someday....read another good book in the time being. When you're out of the house, go back and finish up Dracula.

Wrong question. What is wrong with you-is the right one to ask. I can easily understand someone wanting to read Dracula. But, if your dad says no-then no it should be. You can always ask him to reconsider, then if the answer is still no-then drop it like a hot potato and forget it. You can read it when you get old enough to be on your own. There is a good reason to obey your parents-even when they seem to be wrong. Disobedience opens evil doors you can not see.
You will 'always' pay for your disobedience-always. Its usually much later, and far more that you wish to pay. Don't ever forget that.

Dracula may be interesting for some people but it is really nothing more than garbage and should be placed in the same category as UFOs. Your father is doing you a favor.

He's just being over the top trying to protect you.

His heart is in the right place - just being a little over protective.
