It doesn't. Even if you call it a marriage, it doesn't threaten mine. How two other people choose to spend their lives couldn't possibly affect my commitment to my husband.
Its answers like the second one that make me sick. If you look at marriage from a secular point of view, its a legal contract. If two adult people want to enter into that contract and make legal documentation of their commitment to each other, then so be it. Obviously, no one is going to be allowed to marry their dog, or a child, or a vacuum cleaner -- because a dog, a child, or a vacuum cleaner can't enter into a legal contract. And I think to compare the relationship between two people -- even if you can't understand it -- to something as absurd as wanting to marry your dog is sad.
I'm a Christian, and regardless of what you think The Bible may say, we DO NOT live in a theocracy and we can't base legislation on what the majority thinks that God finds acceptable. If you take religion out of the equation, THERE IS NO ARGUMENT AGAINST SAME-SEX UNIONS ... which is why people resort to silly statements and arguments that fell through a long time ago.
Oh, and by the way ... how does a lifelong, committed, union between two people (regardless of their genders) send an approving message of promiscuity to children?

Threats are not going to get you what you want if you had left them off you might have gotten some serious answers so let me put it to you this way 1. would you drink a glass of water if you know it was 20 % cyanide and 80% pure water most rational people would not so the point is why approve that which is 100% wrong to start with Marriage is a Sacred institution started by our Creator for and between "A MAN AND A WOMAN " no exceptions there is no point to any thing else they cant love as a man and a woman can they cant conceive a family as a man and woman can at best they can be friends but they want to make a mockery of every thing that is clean and Holy and Decent and pure Read Romans 1:21-2:6 that really says it all from the Highest source and authority He is Perfect his laws and Justice perfect and he knows more than all Humanity put together so if he tells us something is bad it is bad hope this answers your question

It does not threaten anything!
No I am not pro gay, I am Jehovah's Witness, but nothing that the State or Country decides threatens what I am or what I do...So really I cannot understand the fight over marriage vs. civil union. As I understand rights, EVERY ONE has them!
Yes???

It's purely a desire on the part of religious lobbyists to punish and harm the lives of gays who are sensiblly not observing nor succumbing to the exaggeratedly homophobic interpretations of scripture that these people follow.
Gay civil partnerships are legal where I live already, gay marriage in all respects but name purely as a sop to the religious objectors.
To the wit above (Chickennuts), we are talking about consenting human adults who want to take responsibility for each other here, to love and care for each other through good and bad times in sickness and health not only financially and emotionally but in every other way...
...Now since when was a dog able to give it's consent?

When did love start to have rules?
Who cares? Homosexuality is found in nature and in humanity. It is not meaningless sex if they want to get married. Yup I said MARRIED. Marriage in an instituition of commitment and joint legal rights. If it was strictly religios then you wouldn't be able to do it at the JoP. Its absolutly nothing wrong with it. Oh now what are we showing our kids?? Pshaw. We are showing our children tolerance, unconditional love, respecting our fellow man. Gay people have thier place in families and in our lives. They don't need to be judged? Why? Because honestly its none of our damn business. They get treated like second class citizens. We might as well just go back to the pre Civil Rights movements.

I feel that a gay civil union sends the wrong message to our children. I worry that our kids will think that it is ok to have cheap gratuitous sex with anyone... much less a member of the same sex. Sex is pleasurable, but its only real purpose is to reproduce. In my opinion the only difference between a gay man and a straight one is what they do in bed. Nothing more than a fettish. If a person likes to have sex with their dog and he loves his dog very much... should they be allowed to have a civil union or get married? Just a thought.
