The average 21 month old baby is saying approximately 20 words understood by at least their parents. I evaluate babies birth-3 years old for a living. If a baby is saying a few words less, or a few words more than this they are still within a normal range. By 24 months they should have at least 50 words.

My pediatrician says its about 50 words, however when my son was 21 months I did a spreadsheet to see how many different words and word phrases he was saying. It was 120. At his physical last week, we talked about that again. He is now 2 1/2 and can say probably 500 words or more. We read to him alot, and never talk baby talk to him.

should be about 50 individual words and a few 2 word sentences. for example he should be saying by now Mommy drink or drink please. But the only one i have to go by is my nephew who just turned 2 and he has been saying 2 word sentences for awhile now.
