This is only when I am trying to sleep, usually in the early morning hours. He will climb on me and stand on the bedpost with his paws against the wall. Then he will meow at a spot high on the wall, close to the ceiling. This morning he was standing on my printer which is on my bedroom P2 tower on the desk I have back there. He was meowing at the a/c vent. At least this is what it looked like.
To those who believe they understand cat behavior I am wondering what your take on this is. What is he thinking?

There are no bugs/vermin in my apartment. I can tell you this with certainty. Also, I don't believe in ghosts. He is nuetered and has plenty of food. If he finished his bowl during the night he will meow at my face, not the wall. When he wants to go outside he will sit on the windowsils and meow and his tail will bat around and make the vertical blinks clank around. The walls he props himself on don't even go outside and are both inner walls. Closet then living room near my bed and the other side of the wall near my desk is the kitchen. Very confusing behavior.

Cats operate with about as much software as a 1985 laptop...I think you're reading into this behaviour too much.

It's a ghost! I'm just kidding :)
Cats mostly meow to get your attention (mine certainly does). It's possible that there are mice in the vent, like the others are saying - but wouldn't he do it at other times of the day? I think he wants you get up and do something for him.
Unless you suspect a cat is meowing due to some underlying medical reason (and this does not seem like the case), maybe lock him out of your room for a while so you can get some rest. Make a comfortable bed for him in another room if he's used to sleeping with you. You can't let him keep waking you up like this!
Unfortunately, experts say the best way to stop excessive meowing when they want attention from us humans is to ignore the cat. That method hasn't worked for my cat - he'll just meow until he gets his hugs.
My advice would be to check out the a/c vent to make sure it's clear, and keep kitty out of your bedroom so he doesn't wake you up - at least for a while. And see if he meows from outside your door at the same time in the AM - that way you'll be certain that he just wants you to wake up!
good luck, I know how annoying that can be :)

he could be seeing a shadow, if there is a window nearby then the moon light maybe crossing the wall allowing him to see dust particles and other insignificant things of which he would like to hunt or play with
some people believe that cats and other animals have a sixth sense and may suggest to you that there is a spirit or ghost in the wall
however I believe that if it appears that your cat is meowing at the air vent when he possibly may be hearing something that you are not...since it is quieter at night then during the day and since most cats can hear better than most humans -he is probably hearing something that you can never hear and that he can only hear when its quiet at night
like possibly a small rodent climbing through the vent,or maybe he hears the clicking of the ac minutes before it actually turns on...if the apartments or the house is connected through the ac venting system then possibly he is hearing something happening in a completely different part of the buliding or the house

Maybe you not believing in ghosts means nothing to your cat. If he sees them, he sees them anyway! On a more non spiritual level though, an insect from outside could very well have got into the a/c vent somehow, and that is what he hears. There could also be a mark of some kind that he is staring at. I know one of my cats does the same thing from time to time, even jumps up to try and catch whatever it is that he sees. I have never been able to figure out just what it is though, so just leave him to it.

He might see a bug, or something moving. Or he might want to get in there, or he could want to go outside. My cat meows at the wall and door when she wants to go outside, so try buying a leash and putting him out there for awhile to explore! Cats love the outdoors [well, some do]. Hope this helps you! =]

Drafts can also freak them out, because they don't see it and/or don't like it. My living room blinds were moving one day because the vent from the kitchen was blowing air towards them and making them move a bit. My cat went crazy going in and out of them, looking for the cause. When the air was cut off - she was cool beans.

Cats are funny creatures. He could see a bug or a piece of dust he can't reach which is frustrating him. Art Bell (Coast-to-Coast radio host) had a guest a few months ago that claimed that cats can see ghosts. Who the hell knows!

Cats hearing is ultrasensitive, so there might be a bird on the roof, or a chipmunk on the roof. Otherwise, he's just trying to get your attention.

You might have a mouse. Of course your cat could just be being weird. Mine has been attacking the space between the couch cushions all week.
