this afternoon I sat down and watched three squirrels eating popcorn. I watched in fascination and for about 30 minutes I forgot my life sucks. I found a tiny slice of happiness today. So I am wondering ; have we forgotten the pleasure and maybe even a little joy in the simplest of things even though watching squirrels is kind of stupid and ridiculous? does someone out there know what I mean?

OMG! I just said that to my friend. She thinks I'm crazy because I always say that I'm grateful for clean water, food, my house, etc. lol. I haven't forgotten the simple things! Many and most people have, but you and me! =) Thanks. You've made my day.

I know we've all heard this before, but Americans tend to be too busy to take time out to enjoy little things, like watching squirrels eat popcorn (which sounds adorable by the way!) As a society, we tend to let things like work get in the way of everything else, instead of focusing on the little things in life. I'm just as guilty of this as anyone, but it is really cool to stop and pay attention to the little details of the world that I might otherwise ignore. I went to this one church activity a long time ago in college, where it talked specifically about focusing on the things we ordinarily don't pay much attention to. I remember the next day going out and looking at some flowers on my way to class, and noticing how the petals were shaped and how the colors gradually changed throughout each petal, as well as noticing how blue the sky was. It sounds cheesy, I know, but when you stop to pay attention to the little things, it makes you forget your own problems for a minute and focus on something bigger than ourselves.

It appears that you haven't forgotten them, which is very important.

I love squirrels myself, and rodents in general actually. It always brings me joy when my gerbils take a seed or piece of broccoli from me.

The most important thing is to try and find something good with every day, and if it makes you feel happy, then it's not stupid and ridiculous as you might think it is.

No, when I'm depressed I couldn't care less about a bunch of stupid squirrels eating popcorn or anything else for that matter. That's just not the nature of depression.

Of course, in any other state, it is slightly amusing. So, you're not as depressed as you could be. Enjoy it things could always get worse.

Yes I understand you. I watch the real estate shows like House Hunters and everyone is obsessed with having multiple bathrooms, double sinks, their own space. Families don't know how to share or compromise anymore. It's all about "me". Look how much press they give Paris Hilton. This girl has done absolutely nothing and every photographer is wasting time and film to follow her around. Keep yourself grounded on what's really important and you'll be happy.

but more like we just lost it
think about if u thought ur life was boring until the moment u found a tiny happiness
that means u didn't even bother to find any happiness

ookkay, i think i got a little off topic
but anyways we haven't forgotten the happiness
we just didn't bother to look

Whatever the mood, it can be brightened by simply stepping out your door and into the breeze, be it icy or warm, or filled with the fragrance of fresh mown grass or scent of blossoms in the trees. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. If you can step away from the house, the walk will do you good.

there is a quote that goes something like this - to lie in the grass and watch the clouds go by, in not a waste of time.
