just check out KHS, Trek, Specialized, and Giant
all have great bikes in different price ranges
don't worry about Canada, US, etc.
most bikes are made in China anyway

There are so many different bike brands and many good ones. You may have to go a little higher in price, or find a shop that sells used. But near your price range I recommend: Jamis Kona (especailly Kona) Marin Surly good value for your buck. Find a shop that sells these and test ride.

Yes, Canada do a very nice mountain bike - Rocky Mountain. The down side is that, although hand built etc. Damn expensive. Their flag ship at the moment is the Slayer. Good bikes though.

Luck

Canada makes some of the best bikes . Most of the brands are built tough because of the kinds of trails ( Northshore ) that they are blessed with . If you are just starting out , perhaps a Hardtail like the Rocky Mountain Flow is suitable for you . Devinci's hardtails are burly looking and almost crash proof but might be too heavy for your liking .
