Can anyone help me find a women's shelter in kansas city, mo. I want to do something nice for the women for Mother's day, but I don't want to call around a bunch of shelters asking questions, they're very hestitant about giving out information. I'm interested in a shelter that doesn't house more than 50 women. If anyone has any knownledge of one, I thank you in advance.

You can look in the local phone book under crisis centers. Even if there's no direct listing for a women's shelter, if you contact one of them, they can probably give you some numbers.

Yes but I would still live in the surrounding area and work and play in the city. The metro area is hard to tell where it stops and starts but if you want to live in the city itself it would depend on your situation. If you are young and affluent the plaza area is great, more affordable is Westport, there are even some great lofts for sale and rent downtown The Brookside and waldo area are "artsy" City Market would be a fun place to live if you worked close and didn't have a car. If you have school age children I would go to Kansas City North not to be mistaken for North Kansas City which used to be a "working class" area but has gotten rough the Ruskin, south Kansas City area is fast becoming a ghetto filled with drugs and crime. Keep your kids out of the Kansas City Mo schools if you go North they will be in either the NKC schools or Gladstone both are better the KCMO the Center School District is not so great anymore. Hope this helped but now I have forgotten your question? Oh yes KC is the best town in the Midwest except Chicago is more fun!!!

The best way to go about doing that is contact the local police department for Kansas City or the sheriff's department and have them contact the shelter and maybe work something out where you can take your gifts to the police department or sheriff's department and someone from the shelter can come pick them up. Most shelters don't give out their address for safety reasons.

I googled "womens shelters kansas city missouri" and came up with a few hits.
Maybe that will be a start.
You are right many are very secretive about thier facilities.
Awesome idea though!!

Im sure if you called the local police and sheriff office and tell them what you have in mind, they would be at least able to give one of the officers who could relay your idea and meet at a neutral location ie: coffee shop. Good idea! Good luck.

PS. Did this with coworkers in college. you'll be surprised what they need and can use.

I volenteer at one in my area....and believe me you will never get close enough...Shelters do not and will not trust anyone...maybe a Church in that area could help you out...but finding out where they are housed, forget it...but it is a good idea...
