No clear yes/no answer ... it depends on the cable company in your area. The cable equipment for the place I live at, does not have any power backup. So, when the power goes out, so does the cable. How do I know that? I have a UPS for my tv set which kicks in automatically when the power goes out. Everytime the power goes out on me the cable goes out too.

You have to be wary of using just any generator to power a TV, or any other electronic device. The output of the generator must be frequency controlled to around 60 Hz. We had a major ice storm back in 1994. I was absolutely snowed under with TV sets that were run at the wrong frequency, and blew out power supplies just left and right. The cable power backup is yet another issue. Ours is backed up, but I use a battery powered color TV instead of a generator because a good frequency controlled generator is a lot more expensive than one for use with electric motors, and such.

The cable would still be live but your TV has no power. So you cannot watch anything at all.

As long as the cable is still on, then yes.

As long as the outage is only in the power lines then yes. If the outage is because the lines, including calbe are down then no (duh, I know).

Also, sometimes the outage is big enough to affect the local cable transfer boxes and that might cuase cable to be out.
