In 1520 Luther blasted the doctrine of the immortality of the soul as one of the “monstrous fictions” of the pope (The Works of Martin Luther, Vol. 7, pages 131, 132). Luther taught that when a man died his soul neither went to heaven or hell fire. Rather, he slept until the resurrection.

The teaching of Luther and the reformers can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
