My GSD will spit any pill out, even if it is wrapped up in a slice of cheese. The best way is the old fashioned way - put your dog in a sit, stand to one side of him (if he'll stay in a sit) or stand over him with one leg on each side. Take a hold of his top jaw, hold it open and push the pill to the back of his throat (the quicker the better). Then hold his mouth shut for a minute and you'll see him swallow. I always give him a good treat after doing this or you'll be chasing him around the house as soon as you get the pill bottle out. Good luck!

The make these things calls pill pockets. You can buy them at the vet, or at a pet store. They are soft treats, with a hole in the center. You drop the pill in, pinch it shut, and feed it to your dog. I guess the scent is so strong, that the dog can't resist, and down it goes. They are about 8 dollars a bag. We got them for our cat, after being bit several times. And she loved them. The treat is also a little sticky, so it's almost impossible for the dog to spit it out. It's great for dogs that are on special diets, and can't have the routine hot dog. Good Luck.

peanut butter will turn pill time into fun time. yummy!
Give him a little peanut butter without the pill so he learns it is good. If he likes it then put a little in a spoon put the pill on it and then cover the pill with some p. butter. rake it out of the spoon onto his dish or into his mouth and he should gobble it down. yummy! or cheese whiz. Cheese may work just as well I dont think big pups are very picky if they find out it tastes good. Brag on him while he eats the p. butter plain the first time.

Peanut butter, cheese, canned food, and soft treats are all options for many dogs. I also make tuna "brownies" that are about the consistency of fudge and they work beautifully for treats most of the time. My younger dog will eat many pills plain, put it in yummy food and he almost never spits them out (though I do have to watch him because he is also much more careful to chew his food than most dogs). You may want to call your vet and ask about dairy products first though. Some medicines can be neutralized by diary (ie cheese) and shouldn't be given with cheese.
However, some dogs will get wise to the pill in yummy food trick. My older GSD is to the point where she will give me a look as if I had just beat her and slink off if I try to give her pills in peanut butter. For her, it works better if I open her mouth (this also requires a specific routine if I want to avoid the "mom-please-don't-beat-me" look) and put the pills all the way in the back of her throat. Then I close her mouth and wait for her to swallow. Sometimes I have to rub her throat to encourage her to swallow. Blowing in their nose can also encourage swallowing if throat rubbing doesn't help. Afterwards, she gets a piece of chicken jerkey (a very special high-value treat for her).

Cut out the snacks, and feed him a weight reducing diet such as royal canin weight control (available at your vet). Do not reduce him to one cup of dry per day! that would be starving him. I feed my great Dane 5 cups in the winter and increase it in the summer to 8 cups when he starts to get excercise again (he can't go for walks in -40 c). How much your dog eats depends on how much excersice it gets. My mothers shepard gets 4 cups year round but then he is also consistenly active and recieves no treats. Also, very important, please discuss any kind of weight reducing plan with your veterinarian or an animal health tech at your vets office first!

If I cant get the pill in chewable form, I get a big glob of peanut butter and shovel the pill in the middle of it. She loves peanut butter and most of the time, she's too busy trying to keep it off the roof of her mouth to realize she ate the pill but she gets some BAD gas from it...
If she still wont take it, I put it in the back of her mouth and massage throat until she swollows.

Try a little bit of raw hamburger. Place the pills in the center of the hamburger and then roll the hamburger into a ball. Your dog should have no problem taking the pill and he will think he is getting a special treat. Hope this helps.

I have tried it it all over the years. I have put the pill in hamburger or cheese and the dog will swallow it in a second and then spit the pill out. How do they do that?
The best way is to open their mouth and put the pill down their throat and hold their mouth closed until they swallow it.

if it's liquid i have always i the past with my german shepards is you make them sit you straddle them from behind, put a hand under their jaw and push up (so he/she is looking up at you) put the liquid dropper in the side of the mouth near the molars you want it right where the tongue starts to go down the esphogus and squirt. hold the jaw shut until it's swallowed but for pills i stick them in hot dogs or cheese or any other favorite food my doggies aren't going to spit out.

Try wadding it up in a piece of cheese...this works on some dogs. My Dobie won't fall for it though...(Eats the cheese & spits out the pill) I have to just open up his mouth by hand & drop the pill down his throat.
