in addition to the answers concerning the shifter button and the shifter being fully in park, the other possibility is that the actual key cylinder is stuck. there are two posibilities. order a cylinder that is coded to match the other keys or order a uncoded cylinder and you will have a different ignition key than the doors. difference in order time is 4-7 days for a coded cylinder and 1-2 for a uncoded cylinder.

hope this helps.

being a Volvo tech also--- I absolutely agree with him. the SCM or Start Control Module {this isn't a key type of ignition, its keyless with a "fob" thats inserted into the SCM and the steering wheel position has nothing to with it jamming as would be the case with other older keyed ignitions} so you are gonna have to have it towed to the dealer which you more than likely already did because you can't remove the key and thoughts of leaving your car somewhere with the key stuck in it aint happening! Right? These type of occurances are a little common at the volvo dealers. Just make an appointment for the car and pick up a "loaner" vehicle or get a rental car when you drop off the S40 at the dealer. sorry to dissapoint you about having to bring it to the dealer. Good Luck !!!!!~

The stearing wheel has to lock back into place first. Turn it one way or the other until it locks, then the key will turn the rest of the way and come out. You might also check the shift. Some cars won't allow you to take the key out if it's not in Park or Neutral.

Try fidgeting around with your steering wheel. It may have locked your ignition. Depending on the year of your car it could also be your shifter. Good luck, hope all goes well.

I have a 99 s70 glt and this happens all the time. Make sure the gearshift button has released. If the button is still depressed, just "flick" it until it pops out, then you will be able to take the key out of the ignition. Good luck!

the shift interlock is out of adjustment [keeps you from turning into lock position while in any gear position other than park.
try pushing shifter further forward while turning key [this should allow you to remove key but have a trusted mechanic make the adjustment as soon as possible.

Try wiggling the key up and down, and move the steering wheel, so that it is locked into position. Sometimes when the steering wheel does not click into the locked position, the key will not come out.

and sometimes, ya just have to shake the heck out of the steering wheel and column, and make sure there is not a button that has to be pressed for it to go, cause the Ford Rangers used to have that and it was a pain in the derriere when ya got in and didn't know it.

Tug on the steering wheel to the right a few times. It may just be locked up.
