It can mean any number of things. How high is it? Normal is between 5,000 - 10,000/ cu.mm. High like 12 to 20,000 usually means an infection somewhere in the body and is usually accompanied by a fever and treated with antibiotics.
When it's in the 50-100,000 range, then there is more chance of a leukemia of some sort going on but that would also be accompanied by a lot more tests..
Some people run normally high with no other symptoms but since you were seeing the doctor, you probably didn't feel well and may have an infection of some sort.

It can be any number of things. It could be an infection, and more info can be given about the infection if you know what specific type of white blood cell is high. A bacterial or parasite infection cause different type of WBCs to go up. It could also be leukemia. Is this all the doctor told you? That info is too vague. You should ask more follow up questions when you go see a Dr.

That you have some sort of infection. Do not worry if no antibiotics were ordered though. Depending on how high this may be something that resolves itself. Everyone has a slightly elevated WBC (white blood count) on occasion. Unless you doctor said it was something to worry about then do not worry. Ignore the person that mentioned cancer. If this was a concern your doctor would have mentioned it.

Another possible explanation is getting so worked up about going to the doctor in the first place can cause demarginalization of white blood cells and cause an elevated WBC count.

High numbers of WBCs (leukocytosis) may indicate:
infectious diseases
inflammatory disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis or allergy)
leukemia
severe emotional or physical stress
tissue damage (for example, burns)
anemia
Occasionally there are lab errors.
Your doctor should have explained what a high wbc meant. Don't be afraid to ask questions. It is thier job to help you and make sure you understand.

You are giving to little information. I would have to see the entire differential on your lab values to tell you what the problem may be.
There are many reasons for an elevated WBC count.
