I have a popcorn ceiling and therefore a electronic stud finder isn't accurate. Also,whats the distance between studs?
House was built in 1990.

odds are 24" on center for a single story: 16" on center first floor ; 24" top floor for multi story

Turn off the lights then take a flashlight and place it on the ceiling shining across the ceiling. You should see humps (the sheetrock hanging down from the pull of gravity) between those humps are the studs !!

16 inches if you have a room above you. Could be 24 inch centers if it's a roof truss above you.
