The other day I was watching a NASCAR race on TV, and I noticed that all the cars had fake headlights. I was just wondering what the point of that is.

Good question.

The decals are so that the cars resemble the cars they represent. It wouldn't look like a car without the headlights ( those are modified). The headlight area is no longer used for air flow and hasn't been since the 80's. The airflow is now at the grill and just under the bumper ( called direct flow tech).

Till I saw EdP's answer I had in mind the Plymouth Superbird or the Dodge Charger both with the wings... Heck with it, IT STILL IS ONE OF THEM 2 CARS! I loved it when Richard Petty finally let the cat out of the bag with 'He didn't care where NASCAR mandated the wing angle, it was the two verticals that gave them the laterial stability that he wanted the most' Those two verticals helped the rear stick like glue, the horizontal wing although nice was on there to add stability for the uprights at high speeds. WTG Richard, and others who were the winged warriors. Did anyone remember the Hollman-Moody Tarrino Tallidaga of the same era with the extended droop frontend? {Sorry for the misspelling}

The point is to make them look like a stock car. In the old days they would put a piece of sheet metal to cover up the where the lights use to be, now they use decals to give the same effect.

I think you were the last to notice it. lol. They are decals, or printed on the wrap on the car. The reason for them is Brand Identity. The different car companys want you to be able to tell if it is a Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Toyota. The ONLY reason the car companys are in Nascar is to sell cars. There is an old saying. "win on Sunday, sell on Monday"

Most race cars in the top levels of motorsports other than open wheel cars have headlight decals. I think it's kinda dumb, but manufacturers like to have something to resemble a street car.

It's an effort to make them look like "stock cars". This is suppose to be "stock car racing". Good question though.

It's supposed to mimic the old stock/street cars that were racing years ago.

They do not have headlights, they are just decals over where the lights would be.

Absolutely, this is one more way they try to make them look like "Stock Cars"! Also, if I am not mistaken, they do use one as an air inlet on short tracks.
