I do a lot of scar camouflage. First, it has to be a healed scar in that it can no longer be red or pink - it has to be light or white. No dark scars.
I only use cosmetic pigments. They are specially formulated for this type of work - I don't use standard tattoo ink on scars so the average tattoo shop that does not do cosmetic work is very likely not stocking these pigments.
Be sure the artist has a lot of experience in this type of work.

I think matching the skin tone would be just about impossible but I would consult with a professional tattoo artist in a reputable shop for their opinion. In my own experience though, when the tattoo crossed across existing surgical scars I have, it hurt alot more than the rest of the tattoo did.

i have a tattoo over a surgical scar and a 3rd degree burn--in both cases, the tattoo guy would not do it without a verbal okay from my doctor--a certain amount of time has to have passed before it is safe to do it and the ink will take--

It's possible but it'll need touch ups. Scars are tougher than other skin and don't accept ink as well. I don't know how bad the scar is so if you go to a tattoo artist they will be able to judge how worth while it will be.

I am sure you could IF the skin colored ink was the same color as your skin..I have two tattoos that are portraits and both have "flesh " colored ink and it is still a drastic color from my skin tone..Why not just get a tattoo over it.?

Many artists try not to tat over large scars .. scar tissue can be very pain full to tat not to mention something like open heart surgery scar would never look right with a tat over it.
