Has anyone done research on this? I've noticed my friends' younger kids always have a runny nose, with lots of parental wiping required. Do they have colds? Allergies? More sensitivity to the environment around them?

wow- my kids never have runny noses. i personally feel that it is a lack of proper nutrition and (especially) the chemicals most people use to clean their homes. i use all natural cleaners and feed my children a nutrient rich diet and they rarely get sick. i notice that people who use air fresheners (especially the plug in variety) have lots of snot issues with their kids.

Babies don't usually have allergies. The docs will tell you a child can't get allergies until they are at least 1. I'm not sure about that.

Usually, if a kid has a runny nose it is because they have a cold or something.

My child is in daycare, and most of the kids have runny noses I'd say 75% of the time. It's gross. I try to keep my baby's nose clean as much as possible. I can't stand looking at that!

I have the same situation with my 1 year old. I've discovered using a cold rag to wipe his nose seems to help and be more comforting. The FDA has just said not to give cold medicine to children under 3, so no medicine is going to help. I've closed the bathroom door before and turned on hot water, got the bathroom a little steamy and let him sit in warm water. It feels good and helps get the nose running. Hopefully it gets most of the stuff out. If you think it might be allergies you might want to ask your doctor. It is getting warmer and things are starting to come out.

Colds...everything is dirty or germy, they put it in their mouths, don't cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze....my daughter blew her nose by age 2 and covered her mouth & nose with her arm (not her hand...what good is it to put the germs right on her hand?) by 18 months....washing hands and good nutrition includiing vitamins keeps the runny noses down too....

They have colds a lot. Children aren't aware of germs so they put things in their mouths that they shouldn't and they don't know how to blow their noses.

Think about it---if YOU didn't know how to "blow" your nose, it would be running on your face, too!
They eventually learn how, though.
