It will help you loose weight. Like any form of physical activity the more you put into it the more you take away. I broke my back a few years back, and put on 50+ pounds. Less than a year ago I started working as a Junior instructor and program manager for a Shotokan Dojo. I worked at the techniques just about all day, and because I was instructing my efforts had to be double what I wanted out of my class. In about 1-2 I lost 25 pounds.
Even though I do not work there any longer, I am using the Style of Martial Arts I learned years back as a rehabilitation for my back and a way to keep my weight under control.
Martial arts is one of the safest and healthiest forms of exercise. I would say swimming as well but that can be deadly. As long as there are solid safety guidelines, you can not beat the stretching and toning that one can experience from Martial Art practicing.
I hope this helps,

If losing 71# and going from a woman's size 24 (US) to an 8 is helping, then yes! :D
Doing forms and sparring are the most streneous activities during class, but even "just" doing one-steps and take-downs can leave me windy. And, even pressure points and the like work my muscles.

yes but the activity should be continuous. Some karate sessions are spent listening to instructions more than moving at the lower belts. It is also good to have a good diet.

Absolutely. However, the more strenuous the training, the greater the benefit. Some forms are more gentle and flowing, such as Tai Chi, others can be very hard and will have you covered in sweat such as Thai boxing.
Choose wisely grasshopper;)

Karate as any martial arts will help you with your conditioning, while getting fit, it could indeed help you shed a few pounds, it can also help you get more definition, be more flexible, and learn self-defense in the process.
