have a small, carb based meal before working out, and have the protein and a little carb within 1 1/2 hours after finishing your workout. This will give you "fuel" before your workout, and "fuel" after your wotkout, as your body will crave protein for rebuilding muscle and carbs for the energy that was consumed while excercising.

Save it for after the workout. Especially if you are trying to lose weight.
Anytime you work out your body will go to exisiting carbohydrates in your body for fuel. Only after the carbs are burned will your body begin to burn fat. You don't want to load up with carbs right before your workout. (yes protein shakes and bars do often contain carbs)
If you were a competitive athlete maybe I would suggest other wise.
Plus, after your weight training you'll always want to get a healthly amount of protein/carbs within 60 min. Your body needs it and this is the best time to feed your broken down muscle fibers and promote muscular growth.

Both. Your body needs the nutrition during and after exercise. Stay away from bars, they're full of sugar and bad fats. A whey protein shake with a piece of fruit before and after your workout is a good idea.

You need to eat something small usually, before a workout, to help fuel your workout. After weight lifting, you need to have protein and carbs within 1 hour, to help build muscle. I know you said you're not trying to bulk up, but when you put on muscle, you'll speed up your metabolism and lose fat, so you definitely want to build muscle.

from my understanding i was told if trying to lose weight you need more cardo if not trying to buff up leave the protein alone and eat healthy because protein shakes help build muscle which can bulk you up and to much protein can be harmful if you already eat foods with protein if you use weights i think you should use 10-15 pds hand weights and exercise that will help you tone.

After workouts are best. You have about a 30-60 minute window where you want to take in nutrients quickly so that your body can start the rebuilding process. After workouts are when you are usually most depleted in nutrients.

the top contr. left out one thing.if your eating healthy, you dont need extra protien,ESPECIALLY if your trying to loose weight.
try to keep your protien intake around:1 and a half grams per body lb...try to cut the carbs out towards the end of the day.

I would think it would be better before,as it would take time for it to disolve and work its way into your system
