The Serpent is Satan, it discribes his "character," slick like a snake.
2Cr 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

According to Genesis 3:1 Satan appeared to Eve in the form of a serpent (or snake) . A real serpent was the agent of this temptation, we can see this by what is said of the natural characteristic of the serpent in the first verse of the chapter (3:1), and from the curse pronounced upon the animal itself. But that Satan was the actual tempter, and that he used the serpent merely as his instrument, is evident (1) from the nature of the transaction.
The scriptures relating to this are in Genesis 3:1-13.
The word in arabic used here is khanasa which means to seduce and slink off from the root of this word comes Ape.
Some schollars believe that the animal forced to go upon all 4's was actually an ape who used to walk on 2 feet, and not a snake as translated. This is a very lengthy concept and further studies are required from the sources listed below.

I think it's in the book of Revelation where satan is referred to as "the serpent". Also it is said of him that he was a "liar from the beginning", and that's referring to the garden. Give me a sec, I'll try and find the verse about the serpent for you.
*smile* as usual, someone beat me to it. Good going Uncle!

Satan is called the "father of the lie", and the very first lie ever told was in the Garden of Eden- "you positively will not die."
Satan wasn't the serpent itself- he merely used it as a mouthpiece.

Biblical evidence... If you can put these two words in one sentence, you will not understand anything you are told anyway.
THERE'S NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING IN THE BIBLE. Everything there is a cute tale written many, many years ago, when people didn't know any better.
Do you believe in Easter Bunny? No? Why not? No evidence? But the story about Jesus has EVIDENCE... OK, just as I thought, you do not understand.

I would hope that if anything it is just a metaphor...I don't think animals or reptiles can talk...but, I don't really think the whole thing happened to be honest...it is just a story around a myth...like the flood.
