This is how it works in my department:
We will first tell you that you are under arrest, and the handcuffs go on.
A thorough search will be done before you are put in the car to make sure that you are not carrying any weapons or contraband.
You are then taken back to the police station to have your fingerprints taken and for paperwork to be filed.
Then, there are two courses of action. If it is possible to do so, we will usually release you with a citation and a Promise To Appear in Court. Or, you will be taken to County Jail where you will be taken into custody by correctional officers.
Once booked into the County Jail, you are able to see a judge on the next business day to have your bail set.
Once you post bail (if you do, and if there is a bail) you will have to attend court to be found guilty or not guilty, and for sentencing if found guilty.
The process for juveniles is a little different, as it involves getting them medically cleared quite often, then taking them to Juvenile Hall.

Only at school fairs... you know, someone pays 50 cents to get you locked up in a paper jail... then you have to pay 50 cents to get out...
That's the only kind of "arrested" I've been. What was it like? Wonderful. It was a sweltering hot day, and there were benches and shade in the paper jail. I stayed in for a whole 10 minutes and enjoyed the shade and an ice cold Coke.

You are tramatized at first. It changes your whole life. Don't try to find out. You sit around and stew about all the bad people out there who never get arrested.

Yeah, you don't ever want to go down that road... I don't know what is much worse than damn near hell. You should always do the right things. Trust me, it's hard to explain, but it sucks x10. Yeah, so ... ... ... it's not fun.
