From time to time someone on R&S will express a wish that we could somehow harness all this diverse spirituality to do something good, rather than just arguing with one another. I personally don't see debates as mere arguing--I like learning how other people think--but I, too, would like to see us all band together to do something good.

What if we were to designate one charity each month and ask all who are willing and able to donate $1 by PayPal (or some like means) to that charity. Would you do it? Of course, we're not all from the same country, so that could be a stumbling block, and we'd have to be thoughtful about the causes chosen, but I don't think the obstacles are insuperable. Surely we can agree upon at least twelve charities a year.

Anyway, what do you think? Lousy idea? Can it be done? Would you do it?

I nominate the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) as this month's charity. Donations can be made online at https://secure.mdausa.org/Gift.aspx

Vinslave: "I already donate money to a charity of my choice..."

I know we're all already involved with our charities of choice, but I thought this would be something we could do together. Working together for a good cause has a way of uniting people.

I hear you, jb_freq. I'm not wealthy and have dependents, too, but one of the best things I've been able to give my grandchildren is to show them that they can help others. Rather than hide the sorrows of the world from them, I show them that there are things we can do to make the world a better place. They help me serve food at the soup kitchen, help build a playground for special needs children, and anything else I can think of. It's fun and good for the soul. Anyway, I understand about short funds. That's the story of my life, which is why I suggested only $1 a month. That's just $12 a year.

I love your suggestions, Danni. I'm especially fond of Habitat and Doctors Without Borders.

Carole: "I personally would be more interested in setting a regular time in which we all concentrate on the positive and a bright and peaceful future for humanity."

That will appeal to the spiritual among us, those who believe sending positive energy and prayers has a genuine effect, but some of us don't believe in prayer. I'd rather we all get together in person and give blood or help build a house, but since that's not practical, giving money to worthy organizations seemed like a good idea.

Lynci: "[H]ow exactly would your concept function as a group effort?"

A details lady. I like that. My wife is one, too. To be honest, it was just the seed of an idea; I hadn't worked it all out in my head, but I was hoping to keep it simple. I thought we could use the Q&A format to suggest charities we consider worthy, use the thumbs-up, thumbs-down feature to vote for the charity of the month, then individually donate to that charity. PayPal is just one way. The main idea is to protect people's identities and financial info. That is, I would never ask anyone to send money to me. MDA takes credit card payments online, and I imagine most major charities would do the same. Suggestions for a better way of doing this are welcome, of course.

Your idea is lovely and refreshing, and I would enjoy participating. Having said that, how exactly would your concept function as a group effort? I am one of those with limited financial means and would feel a bit embarrassed at donating a dollar to the MDA web site, nor do I have a Paypal account. (I sponsor two little girls in Guatemala through Children International which requires a monthly commitment and other monetary gifts during the year for birthdays and holidays.) Still, I am eager to support your suggestion, so any additional clarification would be welcome. Thanks...

I personally would be more interested in setting a regular time in which we all concentrate on the positive and a bright and peaceful future for humanity. It's nice to donate to organizations, but so often the funds get tied up in paying the employees - who are out of a job if they are successful.

The idea of harnessing this diverse group on a spiritual level to intention for peace (something everyone can agree upon) is inifinitely more beneficial, and more interesting to my way of thinking.

Peace!

I admit your suggestion is charitable but cash is not the resource we most have to share - after spending a few weeks on here I find there are honest individuals with integrity, plenty upstairs, time on their hands and a willingness to set the world to rights in a non-confrontational pantheistic forum.

can't we get the administrators to set up closed forums or find our own like the 'M.O.Q.' or 'the Brights'?

Children's Miracle Network

Catholics are Christians. And to respond to your question, specific, different Christians as nicely Catholics take part in Lent - Lutherans as an occasion. whats up, Heaven sure - I play a church provider in a Lutheran Church in approximately an hour and a a million/2 from now. do no longer tell me it somewhat is in basic terms Catholics. and you're heavily out to lunch in case you think of Catholics are not Christians. in the event that they are no longer then you are not the two.

mother nature is working to harness all that energy and heal it from the pain and sufferent that religion caused... all diversity comes from mother nature, religion seeks to group people together making people the same..... nature thrives on diversity and all healing should be put back into the earth and human society building independence of big governments and religions

It's a good idea, but I have to work to put my wife through college. We don't always have enough money for food, not to mention anything else.

Sorry.

I already donate money to a charity of my choice... not to say that this isn't a bad idea.
