Join a political party in order to directly get involved in government. Be an active member so that you could be nominated as a candidate and when you win, it is the start of your active participation in government.

I started out in politics when I was 17, it's pretty easy.

The first thing you should do is determine your political affiliation (democrat/republican). Then call your local board of elections and ask them for the contact information for your city/county/parish chairperson for that party.

You will find that political committees are more than welcoming and will almost certainly have a way you can help out.

Most people have little interest at the local level, but starting there opens doors that would otherwise not be there for you.

After working on a couple local campaigns, I was able to work on a national campaign in my area.
