I don't get it either. It seems like Nikon has rolled over and simply abdicated the throne to Canon - and several others.

The new P5000 looks like a serious entry into the P&S market, but this is the first one for a couple of years that looked like a real player.

Otherwise, they seem to have fallen off the map.

I'm just trying to open up a discussion that seem to be suggested...

If I was starting a camera company today, I doubt I would consider the P&S market. It's saturated with companies of every shape and colour. There is competition from cell-phone cameras. Mega-companies like Canon, Sony and Panasonic have the ability to build the electronics, assemble and market the cameras. Nikon doesn't have the facilities to make chips like others can, so they must buy the electronics from others. Combined, I can't imagine there's much profit to be made.

However, what Nikon is great at is optical engineering and building a true photographer's camera. They are a giant in the SLR market.

Hi Dr. Sam,

Nikon and Canon have been at war with each other on both film and digital for years! Dr. sam I have been a pro photographer for over 25 years! I have been a big fan of Canon and Nikon ! I have used both but I lean towards Canon for 1 main reason and that i feel that canon has a better lens! I think that canon makes the best in the World!(Them FIGHTING WORDS!) i know! but out of all honesty I love both of them! I think this being said, your discussion is now open for an interesting debate!!!!

Thank You,

Bob

i agree with u Dr.sam. nikon is clearly lackin behind in terms on the market of havin serious P&S. indeed, i was rather disappointed as nikon is one of the top notch brands around and seein their p&s lackin in terms of quality and they seem more focus on buildin fashionable cameras.

Seems to me, they more focusin on the majority group of ppl who prefer cameras that look good and are thin with big screens. It has reali been a long time since nikon has produce a serious P&S in the market.

On the take of the P5000, it definately look like Nikon has pulled up their socks and are gearing up and making amendments for their crappy PnS over the years tat prove veri disappointin compared to their rivals.

lets hope they dun wreck tis camera either...
