I've been hearing that perms make your hair fall out due to the chemicals in it. My mom has been making me get perms since I was at least 7. I love permed hair and hate natural hair. If a perm really does damage hair, how come mine has been getting longer since I've used them? Will my hair eventually fall out?

considering that by your icon you are black i guess you mean a straightening perm(i'm white i call that a relaxer and getting it curled a perm) but regardless it is very damaging a perm breaks down all the bonds in your hair and pretty much turns it to jelly then you put the neutralizer on it and it builds back up

the reason your hair seems to be growing is because it doesn't curl and you probably have a hair care routine to keep it healthy, asyou get older your hair may start to break off or fall out, you may just have really strong hair

and I wouldn't trust what was said about perms damaging your scalp or hair roots...perm solution should never be put directly on the scalp and if it is i would sue

Can Perms Damage Your Hair

I've had perms off and on since I was 12. The newer perms don't damage your hair so much, but they will make hair that was already damaged worse. So I get a trim after each perm and by the second haircut, my hair looks great! Many people will say perms are bad because they are "out" right now. But permed hair doesn't have to look like it did in the 80s. And I don't think curly hair is ever out!

I just got my first perm about 8 months ago, and it lasted about 5 months. It turned out really well and there is no damage that I can see what so ever. My hair is now back to how it was before. Although if your hair is already damaged you could make it worst. To see if your hair is damaged, you can try pulling out a strand of hair and placing it into water. If it sinks right away, the hair is absorbing the water too much and your hair is damaged. If not, then you probably don't have any problems.

No chemicals are god for your hair. But your hair is not going to stop growing because you have a perm, it will however, thin it out more and more over time. i cut my perm out three years ago and it is healthier than ever. if you grow your perm out and just get it pressed every 2 weeks or so, it will train itself and stay straight. just a thought

Anything you do to your hair with chemicals or heat damages your hair. It shouldn't make it fall out unless you are leaving it in too long or doing it too much.
But yes it damages and usually makes it look a bit dull.

perms do damage your hair a lot. I don't think your hair falls out but you should go to a salon or wal-mart and get hair products for damaged hair they help.

Nope,if it is done carefully. I chemically relax my hair and its fairly long and un damaged. Once you keep your hair well moisturize it should'nt be a problem. People with damaged-perm hair don't moisturize their hair and use alot hair gel and sprits. So when trying to comb out, the hair tends to break off.

it depends...the cheap at home kits can really kill your hair...but pro stuff can usually be fixed with some of the products out there. my aunt owns a salon and always tells people with damaged hair to use a repairing cream. Panteen, Garnier, L'Oreal....lots of brands sell repairing creams. But its pretty hard to lose your hair just from perms. as long as you take care of it youre fine.
