Susans have SOME green leaves on them by now or are they just dead? Also, how soon should my lilac bushes be blooming (Miss Kim variety)?

I'd give your Black Eyed Susans another month before you worry too much. They are mid-to-late summer flowers.

Mine haven't come up either, as well as any of my other rudbeckias and other cone flowers.

As for your lilac, there could be a few different reasons for no bloom:

The buds were inadvertently pruned off last year. The new buds form shortly after the flowers die back.

The bush is immature. Most varieties need three, and sometimes four years to grow and develop, before they produce their first blooms.

Soil imbalance. This is caused by a pH imbalance, too much or too little of certain chemicals.

Improper mix of fertilizers applied. Flowering of both plants and vegetables is encouraged with higher Phosphorus. Sometimes, people use high nitrogen, which will help produce green leaves, while hindering blooming.

Insufficient amount of sunlight. Without enough sunlight, the plant often will not bloom. Lilac bushes prefer full fun.

Transplant shock. If you transplanted your Lilac bush since the last blooming period, they sometimes will miss a year, as they need time to recover.

Good luck!!

Depends on where you live. I live in NH and the Cherry tress are blooming but not my lilacs. they are just coming out of the buds should pop soon after this heat wave we are having. I am in Zone 5 Lilacs bloom from mid may to mid june so mine are right on time. Black eyed susans are a summer bloomer.

I don't know about the Black-Eyed Susans, but the lilacs would be out now in Iowa, which is cooler than where you are, so I'm thinking it should have bloomed by now there, too.

You didn't say where you live. Here in NE Ohio, the lilacs are blooming and our Black Eye Susan's are coming up. We had three nights of low 20's in early April and it really set the trees back. Our Red Bud tree had hardly any blossoms on it and neither did our Dogwood tree.

Lilac bushes vary depending on type and of course where you are located counts too. In the area they bloom mid May - end of June.
