Watch your kids when they're online. Teach them how to be safe (not sharing private info, for example). Teach them that some people are just creeps & show them how to ignore the losers.

Prevention starts with the parents. Talk to your kids and tell them about the reality that is out there. Don't hide the fact that there are predators. Tell them they exist everywhere even on the internet and that they are out there to hurt them. So they have to be extra careful online. Your kids probably think older people talking to them is gross anyway haha. So its up to you. TALK TO YOUR KIDS!!!! And if they have a myspace, make it private.

So cute Love Life ... sounds like a great ID for a young teen ...
... so get your kids beside u and pretend to be a 13 year old to let them see how those leeches operate
You will have to learn their language of: a/s/l, asap. brb, and things like that ... or get them to say what to write
good luck

Id recomend keeping the computer in a public area like the living room, dont allow them to keep a computer in their own room. Plus just talk with them and warn them about the dangers. If you explain to them the issues as long as you listen to what they got to say it should work out. Just keep tabs on them. Let them no you dont want to invade their privacy but you want to keep them safe.
