The purpose of any overdrive transmission is to keep the engine RPM's as low as possible for fuel economy. The 4 cylinder motor in a Camry has plenty of power to move the vehicle in overdrive if its internal electrical valving senses speed and resistance calls for it.

If you are a young person with a lowd muffler trying to impress the fans with noise there's absolutely no reason to drive in town in third gear.

The reason for the OD lock out switch is to manually reduce shifts going up steep hills, a car filled with passengers on hilly terrain or pulling a small trailer. The OD lock out can be slightly beneficial before passing cars while moving 55 - 65 mph. It does away with the split second of automatic shift down change time. At speeds under 40 the lock out does not help at all as the transmission shifts to second gear, one gear below the OD lock out.

Overdrive should technically be locked out in stop and go traffic, to keep the transmission from shifting into and out of overdrive unnecessarily, which cuts down on the wear and tear on the transmission and also keeps the transmission cooler.

you can use the overdrive all day anywhere anytime, only time i would turn it off is if your towing something,, the clutches on the overdrive drum in transmission are very small compared to 1st and 2nd gear clutches, the overdrive clutch band can slip when towing burning up overdrive, but not towing anything , dont worry about it. its a good gear to use when driving in town motor turns slow using less gas.

Leave it alone - i.e. with OD on. Most cars don't even have that button, and some still manage fine. This option is for driving with heavy load, towing, in the mountains, etc.

i would probably keep it off, the O/D on sedans are supposed to be used for highway driving, where as it's suppose to save you gas at higher speeds...but if your just driving around the city than keep the O/D off....
